Bridlington’s Three B’s Micropub has emerged as a joint victor in the prestigious CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) Yorkshire Pub of the Year 2024 competition, sharing the title with Skipton’s Beer Engine. This accolade highlights the dedication of the owners, Mark and Cheryl Bates, in establishing their pub as a destination for real ale enthusiasts across Yorkshire.

This significant recognition not only cements their status in the regional scene but also places them on the shortlist for the national CAMRA Pub of the Year award.

The rise of Three B’s Micropub

Opened in 2020, the Three B’s Micropub is a relatively new player in the pub scene, yet it has quickly established itself as a favourite among locals and visitors alike. Nestled at 2 Marshall Street, Bridlington, this pub has become synonymous with quality ales and a welcoming atmosphere. The owners, both dedicated CAMRA members, have successfully created a venue that prides itself on offering a variety of ales sourced from small Yorkshire microbreweries.

The CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2024 lauds the Three B’s for its selection of real ales, which typically includes at least one dark beer and a high-gravity ale. The pub’s commitment to showcasing the best of Yorkshire’s brewing talent is a key factor in its rising popularity. In addition to its beer offerings, the pub also shines as a cider destination, having been named Regional Cider Pub of the Year 2023. With over 10 ciders on offer, many sourced from Yorkshire, the Three B’s provides a diverse range of drinks to cater to all tastes.

Skipton’s Beer Engine: the co-winner

While the spotlight is on Three B’s, it shares its victory with Skipton’s Beer Engine, located at 1 Albert Street. This establishment has also impressed CAMRA judges with its commitment to quality and service. Both pubs were evaluated over a four-month period by a judging panel, with each entry rated on strict criteria, including the quality and choice of real ale, style, decor, service, and value.

What sets Three B’s apart?

Despite the joint victory, only one of the two winners can move forward to the national stage. CAMRA has selected Three B’s Micropub to join the shortlist of 16 finalists for the CAMRA National Pub of the Year competition. This decision was made based on the pub receiving more second vote scores from the judges, highlighting its appeal among the discerning panel.

The success of Three B’s is a testament to the hard work and passion of its owners. Mark and Cheryl Bates expressed their joy at winning the award, stating,

“We are delighted to win yet another award, which makes the pub one of the top 16 pubs in the country. The many hours we spend running the pub become all worth it when such a high accolade is bestowed on our little business. We would like to thank CAMRA and all those involved in judging all 17 pubs in Yorkshire.”

An award-winning experience

The recognition from CAMRA is not just about the drinks; it also reflects the overall experience that Three B’s offers its patrons. The pub is known for its cosy and inviting atmosphere, spread over two floors, making it a perfect spot for both casual visitors and ale aficionados. Homemade sausage rolls and traditional pie & peas are available to complement the drinks, adding to the authentic pub experience.

The future for Three B’s

With the title of Yorkshire Pub of the Year 2024 under its belt, Three B’s Micropub is set to compete on the national stage. The final competition will see the best pubs from across the country vying for the coveted CAMRA National Pub of the Year award. This next step is a significant opportunity for Three B’s to showcase what makes it stand out, not just in Yorkshire, but across the UK.

Mark and Cheryl Bates will be presented with their framed certificate in September, marking yet another milestone in their journey as pub owners. As they prepare for the national competition, the pub continues to thrive, welcoming both regulars and new customers who come to enjoy its carefully curated selection of ales and ciders.

The Three B’s Micropub has not only put Bridlington on the map for real ale lovers but has also demonstrated that even small, independent establishments can achieve national recognition with the right combination of passion, quality, and community spirit. As the pub looks forward to the national competition, its story is a shining example of what can be achieved with dedication and a love for the craft of brewing.
