Whoever would have thought that a YMCA would include a theatre? Well Scarborough's does and a jolly nice little venue it is too. During my week in the town, I noticed that a new musical was being premiered at this theatre and, at only £10 for a ticket, it was an absolute bargain. In 'A Nightingale sang', local musician Chris Metcalfe has effectively written a tribute to his late wife, Lynn Nightingale. Natalie Nightingale, who studied at Rose Bruford (where my friend Neil Swain, one of film's leading dialogue coach es, also studied), took the lead. With a strong singing voice, Natalie is also part of the wartime singing group 'The D-Day Darlings. The male lead was Stockport lad, Liam Farricker. Eight other young local actors formed part of a strong ensemble supporting cast. The venue had comfortable seating, a very efficient bar and refreshment kiosk and very friendly staff. Lighting and set design was strong; sound balance was at times wayward, but all in all, this was a very enjoyable production at a small theatre which I can only highly recommend.

Theatre must have been built some time ago for smaller people. The seats were tiny and the leg room extremely cramped. Not even enough space to place a hand bag... no food available in the "cafe". Had to nip over to the chippy over the road before show started. Not sure why it's called a cafe?. Very hot inside theatre, seemed to be no air con. Lots of people commenting on how uncomfortable it was. Not even 20 degrees outside, but very uncomfy inside. THE SHOW WAS GOOD FOR AT LEAST THE FIRST HALF, AS WE COULD NOT COMMENT ON 2ND HALF .. .WE COULDN'T ENVISAGE STAYING FOR THE 2ND HALF AS CRAMMED UNCOMFY AND FAR TOO HOT
