It’s always a brilliant day when a new spot for music opens up, especially in a city with a history as rich as Sheffield. A brand-new music venue, Electric Studios, is set to open its doors, and it’s not doing it quietly. It’s launching with a massive weekend of music and club events, promising a new hub for live music, electronic culture, and grassroots creativity. The buzz is already real, with some shows selling out months before the doors even open. The venue is clearly ready to welcome all kinds of artists and audiences.

A massive launch weekend in Sheffield

The whole thing kicks off on Friday, 13th March. To get the party started, Electric Studios has teamed up with Worried About Henry, one of the UK’s top drum and bass promoters. They're bringing in some seriously big names for the first of many club events. The main attraction is the chart-topping producer Wilkinson, an artist who has become a giant in the modern drum and bass scene with huge tracks like Afterglow and Dirty Love. Joining him are Camo and Krooked, Culture Shock, and Harriet Jaxxon, making for a huge opening night.

But the weekend doesn’t stop there. Saturday, 14th March, shifts gears with a live dub session headlined by the incredible Gentleman’s Dub Club. Originally formed in Leeds back in 2006, this group has become one of the most exciting live acts in the UK reggae scene. Their bass-heavy performances have been a hit at festivals like Glastonbury and Boomtown. They'll be joined by Mungo’s Hi Fi and Aziza Jaye on the mighty Sinai Sound. For anyone into reggae, this is a big deal. The main room will be bouncing, but there’s more. A second room will celebrate Sheffield’s deep roots in sound system culture, powered by the Dubcentral Sound System. It’s a proper nod to the local scene, connecting international artists with Sheffield's own underground community.

What's on the bill for live music fans?

Beyond the launch, Electric Studios has a packed schedule of live shows that will appeal to a huge range of tastes. The initial lineup is a who's who of brilliant artists. There are indie electronic pioneers St Etienne, cult US alternative rock band The Lemonheads, and Welsh hip hop legends Goldie Lookin’ Chain. Also on the list are the rising indie band Overpass and the iconic British folk-rock group The Levellers. It’s an incredible mix of established names and new talent, showing the venue's ambition.

The demand for live music in Sheffield is clearly massive, because tickets for both The Levellers and St Etienne gigs sold out months in advance. That’s before the venue has even hosted a single show. It just goes to show how much excitement there is for Electric Studios. Adding to the eclectic live programme, there's also a special one-night-only performance of Stop Making Sense Live, a celebration of the legendary Talking Heads concert film.

Club nights and top-tier promoters

Electric Studios is also set to become a go-to spot for clubbing. Through its ‘Electric Loves’ series, the venue is working with some of the best promoters and underground collectives around. This includes nights with RAZE, Snafu, and the amazingly named Big Fat Rave. These collaborations are bringing a stellar list of DJs and electronic artists to the city. The schedule already features names like Ross From Friends, Jeremy Underground, Dr Banana, and Call Super. And that's not all; Sully and Samurai Breaks are also on the upcoming roster, promising some serious electronic music club events.

The venue is also making sure to champion homegrown Sheffield talent. On Thursday, 20th March, Toddla T brings his influential Steeze Factory for a takeover. It will feature Window Kid, Saint Ludo, and Kasst 8, alongside a live session from Bigger Den We, which brings together emerging local artists. It’s a fantastic way to support the next generation of musicians from the city itself.

More than just a music venue

What makes Electric Studios stand out is its commitment to being more than just a place for gigs and club nights. There’s a whole creative programme being developed within the building. One of the most exciting plans is to offer free studio access for young people. This will give emerging artists a space to rehearse, record, and work on new material without the financial pressure. Think of it as a launchpad for the next wave of talent from Sheffield. A visual arts programme is also in the works, with exhibitions featuring local artists expected later in the year.

Co-founder Dominic Madden shared his excitement: “Opening Electric Studios has been a long time coming and it’s exciting to finally welcome people in. The response already has been amazing, with shows like St Etienne and The Levellers selling out months ahead of time. For us it’s about creating a space that works for the whole scene, from touring artists and club nights through to the next generation coming through. We’re also developing plans to open up free creative workspace in the building so young people in the city have somewhere to meet, collaborate and start developing their own ideas and projects.”
