|Ever been out and wondered where your drink actually comes from? Not just the pub cellar, but where it was brewed. Turns out, a lot of people care about that, and a recent bit of research shows some cities are prouder of their local pints than others. And if you're from Sheffield, you’ve got some proper bragging rights, as the city has just been named one of England's top spots for ‘British pint pride’. It’s all about loving a good beer that’s been brewed right here at home.
What’s all the fuss about?
Imagine scrolling through reviews for a new film. You’re looking for what people are saying, right? Well, the folks at Freedom Brewery, an independent British brewer, did something similar, but for pubs. They looked at the 20 biggest cities in the UK and then zoomed in on the top ten highest-rated pubs in each one, according to TripAdvisor. Their mission, which they chose to accept, was to trawl through all the online reviews on both TripAdvisor and Google. They weren't looking for comments about the decor or the price of crisps. They were on the hunt for mentions of ‘British beer’, ‘British lager’, and ‘local beer’. Basically, how often are people shouting about the homegrown stuff they’re drinking? After a lot of counting, they put together a league table. The study itself was supported by fresh data from a survey conducted between 24–25 November 2025.
The big reveal: England's pint pride league table
The results are in, and it makes for some interesting reading. While Newcastle upon Tyne grabbed the top spot, Yorkshire made a seriously strong showing. Leeds landed in third place, which is pretty impressive. Sheffield wasn’t far behind, securing a very respectable eighth place, and Bradford made it into the top ten at number ten. Even Nottingham made the list, sneaking in at number nine. It’s like a local derby for who loves British beer the most. The capital, London, only managed to come in second, proving that bigger doesn’t always mean prouder when it comes to pints.
Rank City 1 Newcastle upon Tyne 2 London 3 Leeds 4 Leicester 5 Manchester 6 Bristol 7 Plymouth 8 Sheffield 9 Nottingham 10 Bradford
It's not just Sheffield, we all love a British brew
This isn't just a city thing. To get a bigger picture, the brewery also worked with the data company YouGov, who asked more than 2,000 adults across the UK about their drinking habits. The numbers show a real love for local. About 37% of people said they support local or independent breweries, and 35% actively choose a British beer over an imported one. That’s more than one in three people making a conscious choice to drink something made closer to home. And when asked what they think of British-brewed beer, over half (55%) described it as either excellent or good. Clearly, the quality is there.
A word from the experts
The man in charge at Freedom Brewery, Matthew Willson, had a bit to say on the findings, which were announced on March 3, 2026. “It’s brilliant to see Sheffield performing so strongly in the ranking. The pride people take in UK beers really shines through and it mirrors what we’re seeing across the country. People want authenticity and connection in what they drink, and premium British beers offer exactly that. There’s something special about knowing who brewed your pint and feeling rooted in that tradition.”
He also pointed out a bit of a problem. “Here in the UK, we have so many fantastic breweries right here on our doorstep, but it’s disappointing that when you step into many UK bars, their taps are flooded with ubiquitous mass produced faux foreign lagers. These results show that consumers do see the value in British beers and want to see them at their favourite establishments.”
Why aren't more people drinking British?
So, if people rate British beer so highly, why isn't everyone drinking it? The YouGov survey dug into this too. When asked what would make them more likely to pick a British beer, the answers were simple. Nearly half (46%) said ‘supporting local businesses and jobs’ was a big motivator. It makes sense, right? Buying local helps your local community. It helps businesses like the agency that put this research together, a company registered in England with its main office address in Nottingham. It has a registered office address on Park Row in Nottingham and an official company number. Supporting local means supporting real people and places, whether they make beer or help tell its story. The other big factor was ‘availability’, with 34% of people saying they’d choose British beer if it was simply there on the tap more often. People can’t buy what isn’t being sold.
The story behind the pint
It seems like people want a bit more than just a fizzy, cold drink. They want a connection. Matthew Willson added, “What’s clear from both the ranking and the national data is how strongly British and local beers are valued by drinkers. We’ve always believed that beer carries a real sense of place and belonging, and this research shows how much that matters to people, whether they’re choosing a local beer or a well-crafted British lager. People want authenticity and connection, and they want to know the story behind the pint in their hand.”
He continued, “The results highlight that pubs need to cater more to the growing demand for beer produced in Britain, as many drinkers feel the current offering doesn’t always reflect what they want. At Freedom Brewery, we aim to be the solution to mass produced, inauthentic foreign beers by offering premium British beers with purpose and personality at their heart.”
And his final thought is a call to action for all of us. “This year, we’re encouraging Brits make 2026 the year they spare a thought for where their next pint has come from and to support our British brewers. Opting for a British brewed beer means you’re supporting a fantastic UK community steeped in history too.”
So next time you're at the bar, take a proper look at what's on offer. Choosing a beer that's been brewed just down the road doesn't just get you a great drink; it supports a whole community of people. And for the people of Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford and even Nottingham, it’s another reason to feel proud. Supporting a business that is registered in England helps everyone from those on Park Row to brewers across the land. A company with a legitimate company number contributes to the local economy, and every great business has an office address somewhere.
