About The Montgomery
Description
The Montgomery is a theatre and arts centre based in the heart of Sheffield. We specialise in children's and family programming; presenting a portion of the best children’s shows currently on tour in the UK, as well as programming a diverse range of workshops to enrich children’s and young people’s creative experience. We are also the performing home of many local community theatre companies, dance schools and schools, with a broad year-round programme: musical theatre; dance; open mic events; music; immersive theatre; pop-up cinema; new work, and talks.
The Montgomery is an arts centre dedicated to the exploration and development of creativity for local people and local community artists, from workshop space to art gallery exhibitions. Every first Saturday of the month we open a pop up café that serves refreshments. Our Creative Resource Library is home to collections designed to encourage storytelling and support creativity in churches, schools and care homes.
A Little History
The Montgomery has been a centre for creativity and learning in the community for over 200 years; as an organisation it was formed in 1812 as Sheffield Sunday Schools Union, providing much needed education to Sheffield’s children and young people, enabling them to gain employment away from the chimneys, factory floors and rise out of poverty. In 1886, Montgomery Hall was built in memory of James Montgomery, a well-loved local champion of the poor and human rights activist. In 1948/49 the large hall was adapted to be used as a theatre by Sheffield’s amateur dramatic societies, and has been a thriving hub of community theatre ever since. We are proud of our heritage, and we remain committed to families, children and young people within the Sheffield community today.
Opening Times
The Montgomery Box Office is open from Monday – Friday 10am – 3pm (located on the first floor), and Saturday 10am – 1pm (located on the ground floor). The box office re-opens an hour before every performance. We are closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays unless there is a performance.
The Gallery is open Monday – Friday 9am – 4pm, Saturday 10am – 1pm, and during theatre performances.
The Ladies in Lavender run a pop up café serving teas, coffees and cakes from 10am – 12:30pm on the first Saturday of every month.
Access
Thanks to the support from The Big Lottery Fund and in partnership with Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus, we have installed a motorised stair climber. The stair climber gives access to audience members who can't quite make all the stairs. To book this for you visit, call us on 0114 272 0455.
We are aware of the challenges our historical building presents, and as yet, we do not have disabled access. The Montgomery is a registered charity, and we are very close to completing the ground work in order to launch a major fundraising campaign to raise the large-scale funds we need to install a lift and the necessary re-shaping of the interior of the building, so that we become a theatre and arts centre that is accessible to all.

A cracking little venue that I never even knew about . Sheffield theatres are doing their very best to bring it back to its former glory . A very enjoyable evening watching my parents revisit their youth . Thanks .
Visited recently, loved the show. Really nice and small theatre, but the log room was very limited at the balconies
Absolutely fantastic panto, wish there had been more availability for snacks i.e. bags of chocolate etc... other than that great venue and great staff.
Went to see Rita Sue and Bob Too...... fantastic evening, The bar had a bit of a queue and parking is very limited but overall was a great night !!!!
Lovely old theatre and bar. Comfortable pink velvet seats. Excellent performance of novel extracts by Joelle Taylor.
