I would say this is without a doubt the best pub for food, service and atmosphere I've ever had the fortunate luck to have discovered. The landlady is the chef and she's so good that she introduced herself and personally came out to make sure we were satisfied with our food which of course was possibly the best quality and home made available and the portion sizes are very generous but isn't reflected in the price. Exceptional value for money. We would dedicatedly call in again next time we visit York.
stopped off just passing through the village, never been in the Downey Armes before. Had a drink and a meal with my son. 100% recommend a stop! the food is excellent good beer and friendly staff, we will definitely be popping in if we are passing again. great pub
Poor Pub - shame as it’s the only one in the village I visited on two occasions: One for Sunday lunch - food was okay, service terrible Bar area was intimidating, customers and landlord vaping at the bar, with no access to actually stand at the bar and order - stayed for one poor quality drink and left. Certainly not a fake review - I just don’t care for the pub, the atmosphere and the service. No wonder it’s closed at the moment. It just wasn’t giving what other successful pubs in the area do so well - treat customers well!
Unbelievable customer service. My car ran out of petrol in the village, a mile away from the petrol station. I called the pub to see if anyone could help me and James, not only drove to get me some petrol, but he brought it to me with a smile on his face and wouldn’t allow me to give him any money. What a lovely, helpful bloke. Good things come to good people.
Just nipped in off chance for a tea time meal. Good service & food was excellent. We had a steak meal & a steak pie which were both delicious. Unfortunately we had no room for pudding but will go back when we are starving to fit one on. Highly recommended for a village pub.
