Not cheap, but what trout fishing is nowadays? What do get for your money? Well, you get to fly fish on the tranquil Driffield Beck / West Beck sight fishing to brown trout and grayling in an area of SSSI. The fish are plentiful, and of a good size (I estimate seeing trout over 6lb and grayling over 4lb), but they are infuriating! I fished nearly ten hours for 5 trout but must have had at least 30 inspect my flies before turning away in disdain - a local rod I met told me they have seen just about everything! The river is a short walk from a small fishing hut with a W/C and tables / chairs. It is split into 5 beats which are fished on a 1st come 1st served basis, but there is plenty of choice and fishable water all along the stretch. The banks are sympathetically maintained between easy access and being natural. As well as the fishing, there is loads of wildlife to see in the relaxed surroundings. Did I enjoy the day? Yes. Was the fishing good? In a way, yes (but extremely challenging). Would I come again? Probably. Would I recommend it? Yes, but only if you are looking to sight fish for extremely choosy fish which will test your patience & skills to the limit and you don't expect to bag dozens of fish!
