Sometimes, the motivation to do something extraordinary comes from a very personal place. For one man from Yorkshire, the inspiration to take on the gruelling London Marathon comes in the form of his younger brother and a truly remarkable four-legged friend.

This isn't just about running; it's a story of a family's love, a dog's incredible impact, and a life-changing partnership that made the impossible feel possible. It’s a tale about how an assistance dog called Chester helped a young boy with autism find his voice and his confidence, and how that powerful bond inspired a marathon-sized thank you.

A little brother and a four-legged hero

For the family of Alex Duthie, a diagnosis of autism when he was just four years old brought a lot of uncertainty and anxiety. His parents, Anna and Adrian, from South Milford near Leeds, were left wondering what the future would hold for their son. Like any parent, they wanted to find the best support possible. Their research led them to a national charity based right here in Yorkshire called Support Dogs. This organisation does something amazing: it trains specialist dogs to help children with autism, as well as people living with epilepsy or a physical disability.

After a time on the waiting list, a major breakthrough happened for the family. When Alex was six, he was matched with Chester, a gentle and highly trained Labrador. At the time, Alex was non-verbal and mostly housebound. The outside world could be overwhelming and difficult for him to process. But Chester was about to change everything. This wasn't just about getting a pet; it was about gaining a partner who could help Alex navigate the world in a whole new way. The arrival of this special assistance dog marked the beginning of a profound transformation, not just for Alex Duthie, but for everyone around him, improving their quality of life in ways they hadn't imagined.

The incredible impact of Chester

The change in Alex after Chester arrived was nothing short of remarkable. The clever Labrador helped the once housebound and non-verbal little boy to start speaking. He also gave him the confidence to leave the house and begin to explore the world around him. This incredible impact was so significant that his parents even appeared on ITV's This Morning to share their story and raise awareness about the work of Support Dogs.

His older brother, Ashley Welsford, saw the difference firsthand. “I saw firsthand how much Chester improved Alex’s quality of life,” said Ashley. “He helped him navigate the world, which was much harder for Alex than other little boys. He gave him a safety net which allowed him to go out and explore new things, which may not have been possible without his support dog. Things like going to the football as I often did with my dad. It really was amazing for me to see how much more my brother was able to do after they got Chester.”

More than just a dog: a family's breakthrough

Chester’s support extended far beyond just helping Alex. He provided a new sense of calm and security for the entire family. Previously, simple trips out of the house could be filled with anxiety. Because of his autism, Alex had little sense of danger, making busy places with traffic a huge risk. But Chester became their guardian angel. As Ashley explained, “Chester gave them an extra set of eyes, which were always on Alex!”

This constant, calm presence gave his mum, Anna, the confidence to take Alex out on her own, knowing his furry companion was there to keep him safe. It was a genuine breakthrough for the whole family, allowing them to experience a more relaxed and fulfilling daily life. After ten years of loyal service, Chester has now retired from his official duties. He remains with the family, enjoying his well-earned rest as a beloved pet. His legacy, however, continues to inspire.

Saying thank you with a massive challenge

Seeing the profound and life-changing effect Chester had on his brother, Ashley Welsford knew he wanted to give something back. The 28-year-old electrician decided to take on a monumental challenge: his first-ever London Marathon. On April 26th, he will be lacing up his trainers to run the famous 26.2-mile course in aid of Support Dogs, the charity that brought Chester into their lives. His fundraising effort is all about ensuring another child and their family can have the same incredible opportunity.

“We couldn’t be more grateful for Chester over the last 10 years, and as Alex's big brother I wanted to do something to raise money and awareness of autism and give another child the chance to have their own support dog and best friend, just as Alex did!” Ashley said.

Anna added, “We’re so proud of Ashley taking on this challenge. It hasn’t been easy, but Ashley has seen how much Chester has helped all of us over the years and is excited to give something back.” With a fundraising target of £2,500, Ashley has already raised over £2,000.

The journey of Alex Duthie and his wonderful assistance dog shows the amazing impact these animals can have, improving the quality of life for so many.
