About Sutton Hall

Description

Sutton Hall is situated in the centre of Sutton under Whitestonecliffe, a small village on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. The lively market town of Thirsk is four miles west of the village, and is famous as the town where James Herriot started life as a vet, renaming it Darrowby in his many popular books. The World of James Herriot is housed in the original surgery and is a 1940’s tribute to Alf Wight, vet come author.

Sutton Hall is situated between two National Parks – the North York Moors with its stunning coastline and open heather moorland – and the Yorkshire Dales with its miles of stonewalls and unique barns. It is therefore an excellent location for touring or walking and affords easy access to some of the most beautiful countryside, villages and towns North Yorkshire has to offer. The cities of York, Ripon, Durham and Leeds are also within easy reach.

There is no shortage of fantastic attractions and events to visit in the area – abbeys and castles abound, stately homes – perhaps the most famous being Castle Howard, the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway, the famous view from the top of Sutton Bank and the White Horse of Kilburn to name but a few.

Shopping is a pleasure in this area with local craftspeople, antiques, hand built oak furniture and gifts. Northallerton has its own family run department store, Barkers, and Lewis and Cooper (another family business) is a gourmet delight! The Wensleydale Creamery at Hawes is well worth a visit and there are several local breweries, Theakstons and the Black Sheep Brewery at Masham being two of the most popular. Ampleforth Abbey, a fifteen minute drive away from Sutton Hall, produces some seriously strong cider and apple brandy from their own substantial orchards.

If expending some energy is the order of the day, then there are miles and miles of walking nearby, if not from the doorstep. Helmsley, a market town eight miles to the east, is the start of the Cleveland Way, a long distance National Trail and passes by at Sutton Bank only two miles away from us. Short sections of the walk can be done from Sutton Bank. Cycle trails are also available from Sutton Bank where there is a cycle shop and hire in the shape of Sutton Bank Bikes. Dalby Forest near Pickering has over 50 miles of trails and Dalby Bike Barn sells and hires bikes also. Pony trekking, golf, fishing, gliding and ‘Go Ape ’ - an aerial tree-top adventure - are all available within easy reach. Yorkshire Outdoors, situated in the neighbouring village of Felixkirk, offers 4 x 4 off road and quad bike driving experiences. There are various leisure centres and gym facilities nearby. Braver guests may like to try their hands (or balance!) at surfing at Scarborough or Saltburn.

Foodies will not be disappointed as there is a pub – the Whitestonecliffe Inn – a matter of yards away from Sutton Hall. Other local pubs, restaurants, tea rooms and farm shops are in plentiful supply in the area and of a high standard. The famous award winning gastropub, The Star at Harome is nearby as is the Michelin starred Black Swan at Oldstead. Whitby is a scenic hour’s drive away and has some of the best fish and chip restaurants in the county.
