Vern Overton Cycling is a bike hire and guided-tour company set in the beautiful Nidderdale Valley only a short distance from Harrogate.  Presenting quality road and mountain-bikes for hire and an expert knowledge of local roads and trails, we offer a totally bespoke cycling service

Bike Hire

We have a range of high quality road-bikes, hybrid machines and mountain-bikes all serviced and ready to go.  We have several children's mountain bikes and a proper light-weight road-bike as part of hire fleet, which are suitable for most children aged 10 - 15 years. 

All of our bikes are fully serviced and well-maintained.  No bike ever leaves our workshop without being in a totally safe and thoroughly roadworthy condition.  We are happy to deliver and collect bikes free of charge within a 5 mile radius of Darley. Areas further afield will incur an appropriate charge and this can be discussed at any time.

For road use

Our road bike fleet is made up of the ultra-lightweight, high quality Trek Emonda S4 carbon framed road bike which is equipped with a Shimano 10 speed group-set. Lady riders may prefer the Trek Lexa SLX (WSD) equipped with Shimano 105 group-set.  This is especially designed to suit the female specific geometry.  It comes with a shorter top tube and female specific components, such as a ladies saddle and easy to reach handlebars and grips.  Our ladies bikes are fitted with a Triple Chain-set and men’s bikes are fitted with Compact Gearing to ensure that everyone can cope with the undulating terrain that North Yorkshire has to offer.

Cost - £40 for the first day and £12 per day thereafter.

Mountain-bikes (MTB’s) and hybrids

These bikes are for more rugged off-road and trail use and come fitted with triple chain-set gearing and front fork suspension.  The Hybrid machines are new Trek Dual Force hybrids are a very popular design.  They are capable of varied terrain, such as riding on roads and off-road tracks and trails.

Our MTB range is made up by Trek and Saracen Bikes and are Hard-Tail in design; capable of rugged off-road use. Of special note is that these bikes may be ridden safely on metalled roads, should your planned route include a several types of terrain. 

Cost - £35 for the first day and £12 per day thereafter.

Looking for an experienced ride leader?

Are you on holiday and not brought your own bike with you to Yorkshire?  Don’t know the area around Harrogate and the surrounding countryside? Road or Trail?

Quiet country roads, off-road track or even challenging mountain-bike trails; North Yorkshire has it all in abundance.  We have the specially constructed mountain-bike trail at Fewston Reservoir right on our doorstep, as well as many of the roads that were chosen for the 2014 Tour de France. Rest assured that we will tailor your ride to suit your own wishes entirely

Bike Maintenance Service

A bike just like any other machine with moving parts. In order for it to work efficiently it needs to be cared for and maintained on a regular basis.  VO Cycles has a fully qualified road and mountain-bike mechanic (CYTECH 3) on hand to service or repair your “pride and joy”. 

Your bike will be in good hands whilst it is being cared for by us.  The type of usage that your bike incurs will dictate the frequency of servicing.  A thorough check over and service is best done annually. We do recommend that before every ride you give your bike a visual check-over to identify any loose parts, frayed cables, splits in tyres or obstructions in the wheels.

If you would like to discuss a more or less stringent service or repair for your bike then call VO Cycling today.  Costs vary from £35 - £95 depending upon which service you feel that your bike needs.   

Who founded VO Cycling?

Vern Overton is a former Army Officer, having served for over 30 years. Vern is an experienced Mountain Bike Leader (MIAS), Triathlon Coach (BTF Level 2) and Cycle Mechanic (CYTECH Level 3). He has a passion for challenging outdoor pursuits and has completed numerous ironman triathlon events and mountain-bike endurance events.  He has represented Team GB as an Age-Group Athlete in Duathlon (cycling and running) and has been a coach and mentor of young athletes at the Army Foundation College near Harrogate.
