The Elm Gallery
About
Description
The Elm Gallery is housed within a Grade 2 listed building in the village of Topcliffe, near Thirsk. The Old Post House dates back to the 1700s and used to be the village post office. The property was bought by Liz and Dave Marsh in 2015 and they opened part of the house as a gallery for their work in December that year.
Liz and Dave have quite individual styles of painting, but both share a love of detail. Liz is predominantly a mixed media artist, often using many different art materials in her paintings. She uses bold vibrant colours and favourite subjects include flowers, foliage, landscapes (especially with bare trees!) and mystical themes. Dave has a more traditional style of painting and uses mainly watercolour, gouache and pen and ink. Favourite subjects include landscapes, animals and birds. Some of his paintings are in a restricted palette of blues and greys, with very atmospheric results. He is also a very skilled pen and ink artist.
The gallery has three rooms of art, two of which are on the ground floor. The original paintings and a large number of framed prints are on display, as well as a large collection of unframed prints. Ceramics, jewellery and other handmade items, most of which are made in Yorkshire, are also available to purchase.
