About Merchant Gate Car Park
Merchant Gate Car Park offers a convenient and accessible parking solution for visitors heading into the heart of Wakefield city centre. Situated ideally, it provides a practical base for exploring the city's many attractions, from cultural venues and historic sites to bustling shopping areas and delightful eateries.
The car park employs a modern Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system, designed to streamline your arrival and departure. Upon entry, your vehicle's registration is automatically read, simplifying the parking process. While new systems can sometimes take a moment to understand, many users find the ANPR approach efficient once familiarised, allowing for a smoother experience.

Whatever this new system is ( what can I say? ) very confusing and especially some signs saying etc. " If you forget to pay after arriving then don't worry! You can pay on the way back to the car park after exploring around the town centre". I chose to pay on the way back to the car park via digital ticket machines and after typing in my car's reg number, I wasn't given a price but instead gave me timetables to choose of how long my car was parked there so I've picked all day parking.
I m not sure what people meant when they say it's complicated to find where the right place to park is. You just go in the NPR reads your plate you park anywhere other than a black zone and you come back you pay entering your number plate. The only reason I give it 3 star is that it is very expensive. £17 for 3 days is a lot. This is Wakefield not London.
This is very expensive for long stay. The parking at kirkgate train station is much cheaper. For seven days, you can park at kirkgate for £13 whereas at this car park, it would be £85. £3 per day at kirkgate and more than £11 per day here. Also if you are travelling to London, Peterborough, Doncaster etc the train prices are also much much cheaper. You can get a ticket for King’s Cross for £24 one way at grand central. Only issue is that car park has only 50 spaces. There is a free shuttle comes and goes every 10 minutes from the kirkgate station to this station and other places in Wakefield and back.
Good parking venue for Wakefield Station. Reasonable weekend rates. Good sized spaces and clean (and cool) under cover. Easy access paystations which accept card/cash.
New entrance / exit process by number plate recognition, no ticket. £11.50 for full day.
