Unwelcoming, not family friendly. We are a group of seven family members, including pensioners in their 70's, women too. We got a seat, went to the bar and were told to leave because there was seven of us. Completely shocked to be honest that they wouldn't serve us and how rudely we were treat. They said it's policy and i'd understand ifwe were 7 rowdy lads , but pensioners? Very insulting. We have often been here and regularly talked to the staff, so really surprised how badly we were treat this time. They said it's just policy but surely there should be some flexibility based on circumstances.

Fantastic pub with very polite staff and cosy feel too. My second or third visit to this fine establishment. On a mid week mid January day nice to find despite other pubs shut this one (and others too) was open.

We recently enjoyed a fabulous 5 night stay in the Black Horse pub’s one bedroom apartment (The Cooks Quarters) in the heart of Whitby. The apartment consists of a large living room area with flat screen TV and 2 person sofa. Up 2 steps to a well equipped kitchen and then a further flight of stairs to the bedroom with en-suite toilet, bath and shower over the bath with a rainforest head and smaller shower head. Everything was immaculately clean with a useful welcome hamper of bread, milk, cookies, crisps, butter and marmite. The apartment is dog friendly. Sue and Alan are wonderfully friendly and helpful hosts and nothing is too much trouble for them. The pub has a small front bar and larger back bar with a good choice of beer, gins, rums etc. The Yapas (Yorkshire tapas) is good quality and includes cheese and cold meats and high quality tinned fish along with hot food from midday to 9pm every day. Oh and they also have the best ever (highly addictive) warm pork scratchings! The pub is in a great location in the cobbled streets of the old town minutes from the steps to the Abbey ruins and close to all the shops, cafes and restaurants. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning.

Along with the Fleece, these two are the best pubs in Whitby for me. Brilliantly quirky with excellent ale & efficient service. I regret not trying the appealing "yapas" food now. The front room has the best atmosphere.

A lovely cosy, traditional pub with modern food and drink options. Friendly and welcoming staff, we had some really tasty cheese on toast with local chutney. There were veggie and vegan options and lots of drinks to choose from. A cosy pub with games, music that adds to the atmosphere but isn't too loud to talk over. Would love to visit again when we're back in Whitby.
