Mount House Whitby

We stayed with Ruth at Mount House over the last half term holiday and had a great time. Her house is beautiful with amazing views across the river towards the Abbey which enabled us to appreciate Whitby more. We booked both rooms so had use of the majority of the house including a ground floor living space. It is really well located, close to all amenities, five minutes from the harbour, and we were able to park our car on site too. Ruth was very attentive, made our breakfasts to order and is very knowledgeable about Whitby, the coast and its history. We would recommend staying here if you are looking for a unique, well located, period property with a great host.

Ruth was truly the perfect host - very friendly, welcoming and also cooked a lovely full English breakfast. The house is beautiful and old, with great views looking over Whitby from all of the rooms, including the bedrooms. It’s also very well situated. Wish we could’ve stayed longer.

Stayed 2 nights in this lovely Georgian house, perfectly located with beautiful views over Whitby. The rooms are a great size and have lots of character as does the whole house. With parking available in the little courtyard it was ideal. Ruth as a host was great, lovely lady that makes a great English breakfast. Would definitely recommend Thanks for having us Ruth x

RUTH IS A STELLAR HOST AND AN ABSOLUTE ANGEL… Enchanting Mount House with its elegance, historic gravitas and amazingly central location held us under its spell online, on arrival and during our stay. We have enjoyed the glamour and adventure of Whitby Goth Weekends for nearly ten years. Never before have we experienced the luxury of being able to park in a bespoke, off road, private space just outside where we were staying. Ruth met us on arrival exuding charm, kindness and hospitality. It was a lovely greeting. I had no problem fitting my 5-door Toyota onto the drive. We then proceeded to offload our considerable wardrobe of glamorous costumes. This took some time as we were so enthralled by the beauty of Mount House. We had the whole of the first floor to ourselves; a gorgeous bedroom of huge proportions and a second bedroom along the corridor which became our dressing room. The spacious rain shower bathroom was superb and the second toilet, a useful feature. The whole of the splendid first floor faces the most iconic view of Whitby that everyone “in the know” craves…The Abbey, St Mary’s Church and Whitby’s most cherished and alluring thoroughfare, The 199 Steps. We glutted ourselves from dawn to dusk on the spectacular views from our four sash windows. In Mount House, Ruth has created the most enchanting ambience with exceptional attention to detail, both practical for guests’ comfort and delight as well as artistic and a reflection of Ruth’s interests, skills and talents. We were fascinated by a myriad of captivating objets d’art throughout the house. I loved the authentic, polished wooden floors, especially the creaky wooden staircase! We revelled in the many exotic and tantalising perfumes and scents throughout this beautiful Georgian home. I must now mention, as have other reviewers before me, that Ruth has a passion for paleontology and has translated this interest into a fascinating creative art, producing enchanting, spiral, fossil-shaped soaps. I called it her Soap Opera! We purchased several of these dainty, gorgeously boxed soaps to give as gifts to cherished friends. Ruth is frequently highly praised for her delicious breakfasts. Not only did we enjoy scrumptious breakfasts each day in Ruth’s homely kitchen, but it allowed us to get to know Ruth better and we enjoyed exchanging Life experiences. Ruth was a nonpareil communicator both online, before our stay and during, which greatly contributed to and enhanced our visit. In fact when we tore ourselves away from beautiful Mount House to promenade the streets of Whitby, we truly missed Ruth’s company! Whitby is a fabulous place to visit whether you are addicted to the quirky Alternative side, whether you relish its Dracula and Captain Cook history, its beaches, bars, and cafés and its quaint maze of passages from the Marina to the Mount or just as a fantastic base for exploring beautiful Yorkshire, God’s own county. Ruth is kindness personified. Mount House is a serene and exquisite base. For the discerning Guest, I heartily recommend this Host and House for a magical and memorable experience.

Such a beautiful historic building, updated to modern standards with impeccable taste and much love. The views are spectacular and location brilliantly central, close to the beach, cliff and harbour. The host is caring and accommodating with lots of helpful insights to local history and sights. A perfect accommodation for your trip to Withy!
