About The Royal Hotel Whitby

Occupying an enviable spot atop the hill overlooking Whitby's delightful harbour, in full, clear, view of Whitby Abbey's many steps on the other side of the harbour, The Royal Hotel Whitby is a magnificent Hotel to stay in for a visit to Whitby and the surrounding region of Yorkshire Coast.

Welcome to Yorkshire Description

We visited the Royal Hotel in October 2022, and found it to be as wonderful as ever. With standard rooms available for around £120 per night, or £180 a night including dinner and breakfast, it's not a lot to pay for such an impressive location - you literally cannot mark this hotel down for where it's positioned.

Whitby Harbour itself is a thronging Yorkshire seaside place, which is well worth a visit, and as good as any continental seaside town. You can view it all from a room with a view, or the bar or restaurant in the Royal Hotel.

Everything about this hotel is quietly functional, but it's got lots of space to unwind, such as in the large games area or the comfortable guest lounges - all so important if you've spent the day climbing stairs galore exploring Whitby in the fresh sea air!

The food is good Yorkshire fare, and reasonably priced. It's not a fine-dining experience, but rather tasty food is the order of the day, having spent the day building up a hunger walking on the sand.

Would make an ideal weekend or midweek getaway for people coming from within Yorkshire, any time of the year, or a super base for a longer stay for those coming from further afield. Perfect for: couples looking for a quiet stay beside the sea.

Booked in here for a VIP stay in December when Terrorvision were playing there. Warm & friendly staff who were always helpful. Room was clean, tidy, with great views over to the Abbey. Our room was very spacious and well equipped. Located just out of the main town, up a reasonably steep hill, that's a walk not for everyone, very minor point though. Would definitely visit again. 😀👍

Had a lovely stay here. Booked a Superior Room with Sea View, and wasn't disappointed. Room 142 if you're interested. Very warm welcome on arrival, beautiful room, great view, great bar and very nice breakfast. Self service buffet breakfast, food was excellent, but if i'm being picky the replenishment of the dishes was not great. No matter, this is a great place to stay and enjoy the amazing seaside town of Whitby!

The public areas of the hotel have been nicely decorated, but our room was more like a youth hostel room. For some reason we had been allocated one room, but then on checking in they changed it. The room we stayed in had twin beds rather than a double, and the bathroom was cold, and didn't smell very fresh. The basin and the bath took ages to drain away, the shower was tepid rather than hot/warm, and the heating was a very old fashioned towel rail that switched itself off. With huge floor to ceiling single glazed windows, this made the bathroom rather unpleasant to use.

Really lovely hotel. Room was a lot nicer than expected and could tell it had recently been renovated. Really comfy bed and lovely bathroom. Shower was perfect and easy to use. Had all facilities required. And a really good sized TV! Breakfast was yummy with a good system to ensure fresh food was being put out often. Really nice restaurant. Downside was that the room was quite dusty however did look overall clean in terms of bedding, towels and tables. We also found that the service wasn’t great at times. When we first arrived we were treated by a woman on reception who was a bit rude and snappy. We heard her give this attitude to another couple who were staying here so I think that needs improvement. Overall a really nice stay and I would recommend this hotel to anybody staying in Whitby. Great location from the centre!

Firstly, the parking we booked was easy to find and felt secure with generous bays, the hotel staff we encountered were all very helpful and friendly. The room we were allocated was spacious, very clean and quiet, and the buffet breakfast on offer was tasty and plentiful in a very pleasant environment. The bar areas are very quirky and different, a nice change. Overall, a great 2 nights stay, and we would certainly return.
