Had my mum's wake at The Angel. Not impressed. Paid a budget of £225 for buffet. Lucky if we had £50 worth. Sandwiches all on white bread, no brown. Cheap margarine and minimum filling. Cooked food was overcooked and very hard. Chips were edible. All food was cheap and not very appetising, the function room smelled fusty, the tables were old and needed some kind of covering. The carpet was so sticky in some areas that your shoes stuck to them. We had to wait for over an hour for our buffet to be laid out. The toilets were less than desirable, old split foam seat in the ladies no seat in gents. Paid £330 in all, plus a refundable £50 deposit. We were refused the deposit refunded until we returned the foil trays we had taken some food on, we had old trays, so they were obviously reused, not hygienic. Sorry for the rant, but it was beyond disappointing. Photo of a sample of the sweets were given.
Lovely little pub. We come here on sunday to play pool. Lovely manager who made us feel so welcome with our dog. Will be coming here again.
There's a nice friendly atmosphere at The Angel. Sunday roast and a pint for £10.95 was good value. Dining area is clean, light and spacious with pleasant views over the garden . The meat and vegetables were nicely prepared and hot. Dining room was full by 12.30 so obviously popular. Recommended.
Can't speak for the pub itself. This review is based on experience of booking the function room. To summarise - I strongly recommend avoiding this place. Bit of a rant, I apologise: I booked the function room and paid the deposit for my son's first birthday party about 2-3 months in advance. Got told we'd get the function room and all the outside space at the back. We go in a week before the party to pay the remaining balance and suddenly she's got no record of us making the booking. Accused us of having not paid the deposit and not booking. Had to pull up online banking records to show that we had paid the deposit. Suddenly she finds our booking in her "other"(?) book. No apologies for accusing us of not paying the deposit. Day before the party we get a call that they've double booked. We're only getting half of the outside space now. Fine - it's not a huge party and we don't mind sharing. Do we get offered a partial refund? No. Comes the day of the party. We get there to set up and there's a bouncy castle we didn't order in our half of the gardens. Another mixup and the other party's bouncy castle in our half of the garden. Now we're down to 1/4 of the space we paid for. No partial refund is offered. I get out into the 1/4 of the garden to set up and there's broken glass and rubbish everywhere. Remember this is a 1st birthday so there's young kids so I have to get everything cleaned up quickly. Also the toilets are broken. No toilet seat in the women's toilet and the light doesn't work. 15 minutes before our guests arrive the bouncy castle starts playing crazy loud kids music over the quiet music we had playing. I ask the landlady to turn it down and she refused. At this point I'm frustrated at the fact she has messed up almost every part of this booking and has not apologised once or offered any kind of refund. I tell her the music is unacceptable and I have been very reasonable about everything else that has gone wrong. Visibly annoyed, she finally turns the music down and then starts badmouthing me to my guests and for some reason confronted my wife in the middle of the party. We cleaned afterwards leaving it in a far better state than we left it. She still didn't give us our deposit back. A few days later some of my guests got parking tickets even though they put their reg into the stupid iPad thing. Pub were absolutely no help in fighting the tickets. I'd never consider having a function here again. I will say on the plus side that all the staff except for the landlady were lovely.
Attended the Angel yesterday for Sunday lunch with family, absolutely lovely food and environment, great value for money. Staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Will definitely be coming again soon. Very highly recommended. Thank you soo much xx
