We called today and had a look around. It was free open to the public as it was Wressle fate Sunday. It's an interesting place to visit and the information boards gave a lot of history about it.
Went for an reenactment weekend. The camping was a bit hectic but there were a live band one evening and a beer tent. The castle itself is lovely though a ruin it's still wonderful to see.
The best place to find out when it's open is the Facebook page. When it is open, there is a small charge that goes towards the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. There is a civil war reenactment playing out the Siege of the castle. There are plenty of bangs! You can bring dogs but maybe best not with the explosions. The castle is one of few in East Yorkshire and is more a posh manor house than traditional castle. About half remains to full height and there are information boards to guide you round. The ground is uneven and it's mostly gravel in the castle. A fantastic day out when it's open!
Wrestle Castle is a ruined fortress palace built in the 1390s for sir Thomas percy (who was executed for rebelling against Henry lV). During its haydays in the 16th century. It had landscaped gardens and fish ponds. It is a grade 1 listed ruin and scheduled monument. It's privately owned and unfortunately not open to the public very often. You can see it from the road in the village or walking along the bank of the river derwent, and you get a good view of it from the train going out of hull. It's definitely worth visiting if you get the chance.
Great day out to watch the English civil war re-enactment once a year!
