We popped in for breakfast on a Friday morning as a table of two. Staff not very welcoming but it was a tad busy so we just sat down. We both opted for the Spring Breakfast. They don’t call it a full English as half the stuff isn’t included. You can’t have fried egg, just poached or scrambled only. I understand having to pay extra for hashbrowns, but £3.50 for bog standard baked beans is outrageous. We saw the guy next to us had also added beans (obvs a moneymaker for them) and saw it was a decent portion so we only added one to share. We also added the hash browns which were £4! It took about 30 minutes for the food to come out, which I don’t mind, but things were cold. The poached eggs were overcooked. Hash browns barely cooked. No butter with the toast. Bits in the coffee. When you ask for sauce, you’re granted a measly little pot. When you tot it up, the breakfast came to £17.75 each (£14 base each then £7.50 for the extras). Wouldn’t go back unfortunately. It totalled £43 with drinks, which I feel is too steep for the quality.

A delightful cafe on Fossgate serving excellent coffee and tasty pastries. Ordered 2 flat whites, a croissant and a date & cinnamon oat bar, so yummy! Best croissant hubby has ever had. Cheery staff and low key, non-touristy vibe. What a great way to start the day!

I’m definitely adding Spring Espresso to my preferred list of places for coffee/ lunch when I visit York. It’s a good size with plenty of seating and different table sizes across 2 areas, one of which is a step up. Choose a table then order at the counter. There’s a very tasty looking menu with quite a lot of egg dishes but it was too early for lunch so I just ordered an Americano and a piece of millionaire shortbread. My order arrived quickly. I asked for oatmilk on the side and was pleased to get a really good amount. The shortbread was delicious; probably the best I’ve eaten anywhere, a very light base, creamy caramel and quality chocolate topping. The cafe was busy but there was plenty of room for more; customers were across the age range and included people working in laptops. Toilet facilities are on the raised level and tucked away. I will definitely be visiting again!
