Had an amazing experience at Fat Hippo, and our waitress Lily W was a big part of that. She was friendly, welcoming and incredibly attentive from the moment we arrived, creating such a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. Lily checked in with us at all the right times and made sure everything we needed was taken care of without ever feeling rushed. The burgers were delicious, and her warm, genuine service made the whole visit even better. Thank you, Lily, for the fantastic service - we’ll definitely be back!

I'm glad we found this place. We visited at 2.30pm so they had a lunch offer on for £9.50 before 5pm. The food was amazing, we got the cheese balls and the pull was very stretchy! Chicken strips were really nice! The staff were good, didn't take too long to be seated and served. Would definitely recommend this place. Bonus we just found one in our city too!

Really enjoyed this burger joint! It felt genuinely welcoming as soon as we stepped in. There’s a great selection of burgers and sides. We had the "Fat Hippo" and "PB + JJ," accompanied by waffle fries and purple slaw. The service was polite and efficient. Our server took time to explain everything in detail, which really showed their hospitality. We debated whether we preferred Byron Burger or Fat Hippo, and concluded that FH is simply more fun, while Byron feels a bit more adult‑centric. All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch and will definitely be back to satisfy our burger craving. P.S. For anyone keen to try the desserts, it might be worth saving some room and ordering the “little” version of the burgers

Not exaggerating when I say this was the nicest food I’ve ever had in a restaurant! The drinks were fabulous too! Nice, polite staff who served and checked up on you with a smile! Special shout out to Gracie Casey (hope I said that right!!) and the other girl working with Gracie today (didn’t catch the name! :( ). 11/10 will come by again, you guys are awesome! 💗

We decided to visit Fat Hippo for Restaurant Week in York and were greeted by a waitress leaning on the bar with her thumbs in her pockets and a casual "2?"—setting the tone for the staff's laid-back attitude. We were seated in a cramped, dimly lit back room, feeling a bit claustrophobic. The toilets were dirty, and the restaurant itself seemed neglected, with dusty corners and air vents. On the plus side, our drinks and starters arrived quickly. The chicken tenders were good value, though they had a lingering taste of overused cooking oil. The mains came out fast too and looked promising. I was digging into my chicken burger when the waitress accidentally sprayed us and our food with cleaning solution whilst cleaning the table next to ours. She didn't notice, so we laughed it off and mentioned it to her, and she responded with a casual "sorry." Then, when my partner cut into her beef burger, the patty looked somewhat raw inside, despite it being a thin patty. The chips were clearly refried— dry and tasteless. We told the waitress that the burger seemed uncooked and her response was that everything was temperature-probed. We were still unhappy and put off by it. She offered to remake it, but we had plans and didn't have time. When the bill came, we were given a £2 discount on the burger. While appreciated, it felt insulting since my partner didn't touch it. We paid and left, disappointed and hungry. We won’t be returning, and after talking to friends, we discovered that they had had similar issues with undercooked burgers. It was a waste of time and money. We've included photos, you decide...
