From the minute we stepped through the door at The Raj York, we felt welcomed. The restaurant is cozy — seating about 70 — and has been refurbished in a contemporary Indian style, blending comfort with tasteful décor. We started with poppadoms and a set of starters; the onion bhajis were crisp, well-spiced and full of flavour. Moving on to mains, I chose a house-special Balti dish — the curry sauce was rich and aromatic, with spices balanced perfectly: bold but not overwhelming. My partner ordered a tandoori mixed-grill, served sizzling and nicely grilled — juicy meat, good portions and lovely presentation. The rice and naan breads complemented the dishes really well. For drinks, we appreciated that The Raj York is fully licensed: a glass of wine paired nicely with the curry, rounding out the meal. Service throughout the evening was friendly, attentive and professional. Staff made sure drink glasses were topped up, cleared plates without fuss, and checked in just enough to make the whole evening feel smooth and relaxed. Overall, The Raj York hit all the marks: authentic and delicious Indian cuisine, good portion sizes, well-prepared dishes, warm hospitality, and a nice vibe — especially if you go early when it’s quieter. It’s perfect for a relaxed dinner out, a curry night with friends, or a low-key treat night. I’d happily give it 5 stars again and recommend it to anyone visiting York who wants a reliably great curry.
We had a lovely Christmas Day at the Raj - the food and service were both second to none, and the value was incredible! Plenty of vegan and vegetarian options too which made it easy to order - I can definitely recommend the vegan imani!
Beautiful, delicious hot food cozy atmosphere would recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️best Indian restaurant in York
Recently ordered Chicken Tikka and Paneer Makhani from this place and questioned our choices in life. It was so surprising to see positive reviews until I realised the reviews are from non Indians. This place has vowed to ruin indian food for people because they care more about customising it to white palettes than actually making food with flavour. Everything doesn’t have to be coconutty or sweet. So if you’re an Indian, please save your money. I think the management has to reconsider what they’re offering to their non native Indian customers who eat anything without complaining. Very disappointed! PS: Yes I’m Indian but don’t call me cheap because I called out your subpar rubbery ultra processed food.
We visited for the first time whilst staying in York for a few days. The restaurant was very quiet with only us and two other people. I ordered a Baileys and was given a double which I didn’t ask for. We found the waiter to be polite but very pushy, trying to get us to order more than we wanted to. The food however was faultless and very tasty.
