Black Wheat Club

We queued (very good sign!) for about 20 minutes at peak lunchtime for a table and it was well worth the wait. Lovely welcome and service throughout, the food was incredible and the atmosphere was relaxed and cosy. It’s the new favourite for food and or a coffee and pastry! Got some pastries to go. Thanks ☺️

Since my first visit, shortly after their opening, the Black Wheat Club has been my favourite brunch in York. Yesterday evening, however, I had my first dining experience. It was nothing short of extraordinary. Everything in the venue - whether lighting, music, general aesthetics - foreshadowed what was to become a wonderful solo dining experience. The housemade plums soda with gin was just perfect to start the evening. Then, the most scrumptious journey began with a Baron Bigod Brie. The combination of the brie, the crispy yet soft toast, topped with the chive blossom gel was downright impressive. The chicken thighs that followed were incredible, but oh, the cavalo nero butter sauce was the star of the dish. I had never tasted anything like it and will be sure to return for more! Next was the pork steak. Rather than burying it, the flavour contrast between the chive butter & the Yorkshire tomato salsa are what enables the diner to truly experience the textures and hidden flavours of the pork steak itself. The exquisitely designed menu, the carefully prepared dishes, the purposeful passion for detail and presentation do not just add up, but exponentially elevate the food being served. These are a testament to the dedication and mastery of the chefs behind the counter. Courtesy is a must in hospitality, yet it seldom feels sincere. However, nowhere else have I been received, and made to feel as welcome and cared for as I did yesterday at the Black Wheat Club. Resistance is futile, anyone who loves excellent food must eventually surrender and have a taste of what the Black Wheat Club has to offer. I will be sure to return soon!

Wow! Wonderful experience at brunch! As a veggie it’s rare to find so much choice and innovative dishes! Staff were happy to bespoke dishes for us. Speciality bakery and a focus on locally sourced ingredients and even right down to ethically and locally sourced produce; even the crockery! Sasha was very warm, accommodating, friendly and helpful! Would love to try evening next! Highly recommend!

um this was one of the best sourdough breads I have had in AGES. beautifully presented. but primarily the staff are the sweetest kindest most lovely people ever. so accommodating, professional, and smiley. especially the girl with the checkered trousers and the climbing guy with the glasses!!!

Visited Black Wheat Club recently during our trip to York. After hearing about the place online, we definitely wanted to give it a try — and we were not disappointed! Delicious food, great coffee, and really friendly customer service. We’ll be back next time we visit York. Highly recommend trying the porridge — it was excellent.
