Harness Racing globally is the most popular form of horse racing, and although not well known on these shores is contested all over the UK at over 30 different locations. Harness Racing has flourished for over 30 years at York Harness Raceway, Nun Monkton - just off the A59 York to Harrogate Road. And with over 100 races per season (between May and October) and over £60,000 in prize money, it is easy to see why York is England’s Premier All Weather Hard Track. There are many reasons why Harness Racing is popular. If you appreciate beautiful horses with brains, racing very fast, on tracks where friendliness and value for money are bye words, then you can see why the sport is successful. It is very easy to get into this sport, as an owner the horses are relatively inexpensive and training fees are a fraction of Thoroughbreds. As a participant almost anyone can get up and train a horse and any competent horse person can aspire to become a driver. For the racing fan, the average entrance money for a race meeting is about £8.00 (under 14's go free), with access to all public areas, gambling opportunities and food/drink on offer that is great value. York in 2013 are hosting 16 fixtures starting on Monday 6th May, with the famed Championship Day on 29th June and the Annual Standardbred Sale on 5th October. Most fixtures are Saturday dates, with racing commencing at 2pm. There is a fully licensed bar, oncourse bookmakers, café and bouncy castle for the kids, parking is plentiful and included in entrance price. Kids under 14 go free and special discounts are available for group bookings, parties and events.
