Sir Stephen Hough's Vision
Sir Stephen Hough, a renowned figure in the world of classical music, expressed his admiration for The Leeds, recalling how he was captivated by the competition during his childhood:
“For this young pianist, it was both exciting and an unattainable goal as the whole nation sat glued to the television – not for the Wimbledon or World Cup finals but to witness the finest piano playing. Now, some 50 years later, I’m honoured to be part of The Leeds’ reimagining.”
His vision for the 2027 Competition revolves around creating a platform that allows young pianists to express their true selves, rather than merely competing against one another. He believes competitions should not feel like gladiatorial contests but rather opportunities for artists to showcase their individuality and passion for music:
“In an age when the concert experience competes with innumerable entertainment and cultural options, we want to discover artists who can captivate the jurors and the audience over the course of an evening.”
Exciting Changes for 2027
The Leeds Competition is set to undergo significant reforms aimed at redefining what an international music competition can be. Some of the key changes include:
No prescribed repertoire: For the first time in the Competition's history, participants will have the freedom to choose the music they wish to perform.
Increased age limit: The upper age limit for competitors has been raised to 35, acknowledging that artists develop at different paces.
Enhanced prize package: The First Prize has been increased to £50,000, with additional support designed to assist winners in their career development.
New awards: Introduction of the Encore Prize for outstanding encores and the Leeds Piano Trail Prize for a community-focused project.

A World-Class Jury
As part of the new direction, Sir Stephen has assembled an impressive international jury for the 2027 Competition. This esteemed group includes renowned pianists such as Piotr Anderszewski, Lucas Debargue, Janina Fialkowska, Alexander Gavrylyuk, Orli Shaham, Yeol Eum Son, and previous Leeds prize-winner Kathryn Stott. Additionally, the jury features the Master of the King’s Music, composer Errollyn Wallen.
Competition Timeline
The timeline for the 2027 Competition is set, with applications opening on 2 July 2026 at 13:00 BST. The International First Rounds will take place in major cities around the world, including:
New York
Paris
Berlin
Vienna
Beijing
Seoul
These rounds will occur between 30 March and 6 April 2027. The Second Round and Semi-Finals will return to the Great Hall of the University of Leeds from 8 to 10 September, followed by the Concerto Finals at Leeds Town Hall on 17 and 18 September, featuring performances with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Domingo Hindoyan.
