|Recent research from King Pins has revealed a surprising truth about British summers: many people secretly dislike the outdoor activities that are typically associated with the season. According to a national survey involving over 2,000 adults, two in three Brits (65%) admitted to pretending to enjoy outdoor summer activities, while a staggering 68% expressed relief when their plans to be outside were cancelled. This has led King Pins to offer free bowling for kids at their Leeds White Rose venue, aiming to provide a fun indoor alternative during the summer holidays.

The survey highlighted that while the idea of enjoying the great outdoors may be appealing, the reality often falls short. Many respondents cited common annoyances such as:
Crowds and parking issues (50%): More frustrating than pesky wasps (41%) and even more bothersome than the threat of sunburn (37%).
Warm drinks (62%): A cold pint can quickly become unpleasantly warm within just 20 minutes in a beer garden.
Wildlife interruptions (74%): Nearly three-quarters of those surveyed reported having their food or drink ruined by wasps or seagulls.
This research indicates that many people do not fit the stereotype of the "outdoorsy" Brit, with nearly half of those surveyed considering themselves more of an indoor person. Some have even accepted this identity, while others keep it a secret from friends and family.
Embracing the Indoors
In response to these findings, King Pins is making it easier for families to enjoy their time indoors. Throughout the summer holidays, kids can bowl for free before noon at the King Pins Leeds White Rose venue. This initiative aims to provide a cool, air-conditioned space for those who prefer to avoid the heat and crowds outside.
Additionally, King Pins is launching a weekly voucher campaign, offering families new deals each week, which encourages them to enjoy their time indoors without breaking the bank. This move aligns perfectly with the preferences of many Brits who, when given the choice, would rather engage in activities like bowling (18%) or arcade games (18%) instead of braving the unpredictable British summer.
Support from King Pins
James Travis, Marketing Manager at Pins Leisure Group, spoke about the pressure many Brits feel to enjoy the summer, despite the often less-than-ideal conditions:
“As soon as the sun comes out, there’s real pressure for us Brits to act like we’re having the time of our lives, even when we’re really battling less-than-ideal conditions.”
“We promise to never make you feel weird for not loving summer.”
King Pins venues are designed to be fun for all ages, offering a range of activities from Ten Pin and Duck Pin bowling to ice-free curling and karaoke. With a commitment to providing a wasp-free environment and refreshing drinks that stay cool, the venues aim to offer a perfect escape from the summer heat, rain, or crowds.
