Ever wondered what it takes to run a zoo? It’s not just about feeding the meerkats and mucking out the monkeys. There’s a whole world of science, conservation, and management that goes on behind the scenes. And now, a college in Yorkshire is pulling back the curtain and putting its students in charge, creating something totally new in the process. Askham Bryan College is about to launch the UK’s very first Teaching Zoo, a ground-breaking initiative that’s set to change how we think about animal education. This isn't just a college project; it's a fully public facing wildlife park run by the next generation of animal experts, and it’s an experience you won’t want to miss.

So, what exactly is a teaching zoo?

Imagine your next family trip to see the animals, but this time, the people giving the keeper talks, running the workshops, and answering your questions are all dedicated students learning their craft. That’s the big idea behind the Teaching Zoo. Askham Bryan College is transforming its already popular Wildlife and Conservation Park into a place where learners get serious hands-on experience.

Instead of just sitting in a classroom, these students will be responsible for the daily operations of a real, working zoo. This gives them incredible real-world skills while offering visitors a completely fresh and engaging day out. They will be managing everything from animal enrichment to visitor engagement, all under the watchful eye of seasoned industry professionals who are there to guide them. This unique model means visitors get a brilliant experience, seeing the passion and dedication of young conservationists up close.

Getting real-world skills for the future

The programme is designed to build a whole range of skills that are vital for a career in the animal sector. This includes everything from the complexities of zoo management and the science of animal care to the art of creating engaging visitor experiences and promoting sustainability. The students will be involved in managing the park's daily operations, planning educational workshops, and even delivering fascinating keeper talks to the public.

As Lauren Lane, the Animal Sciences and Conservation Manager, put it:

“This is about breaking down the barriers between education and industry. The Teaching Zoo gives our students not only theoretical knowledge but the hands-on experience they need to be future leaders in conservation, animal care, and environmental science.”

The project is a massive step in preparing students for their future careers, ensuring they leave college with skills that employers are desperate for.

An Animal Management student from the college shared their excitement, saying:

“Animal Aspirations will be very beneficial, as it will give us real industry experience and help us develop our skills by taking responsibility for the animals around the park.”

This direct involvement is what makes the experience so powerful.

Come and see the students in action

Fancy seeing this amazing project for yourself? You’re in luck. The public can get a special preview of the Teaching Zoo experience during a four-week student takeover called the ‘Animal Aspirations’ project. From Monday, 13th April to Friday, 8th May, the students will be running the wildlife park on weekdays. This is the official launch of the initiative, where they'll be putting their training into action for the first time. They’ll be managing all the daily operations, from giving keeper talks and running workshops to promoting the park to new visitors.

It’s a fantastic opportunity to support these aspiring zoologists and conservationists while enjoying a unique day out. You'll get to see their passion firsthand and ask them questions about the animals they care for. This is a chance to witness a new kind of education in action and be part of an exciting new chapter for the wildlife park.

A new blueprint for education

This initiative from Askham Bryan College is more than just a local project; it could set a new standard for education across the country. By blending academic learning with the responsibility of managing a public facing attraction, the college is creating a powerful new way to learn. John Maxwell, Head of Animal Management, hopes this will inspire others.

“We hope this student-led model will serve as a blueprint for other institutions and encourage a wider conversation about innovation in further and higher education.”

The whole point is to create a dynamic and immersive space for both students and visitors, and it looks like they are well on their way to achieving that.

How to plan your visit

The ‘Animal Aspirations’ student takeover is running on weekdays from 13th April until 8th May. This is your first chance to be part of the Teaching Zoo experience. The wildlife park itself is home to over 100 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and more, many of which are threatened in the wild. As a member of BIAZA (the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums), the park is part of a global network dedicated to conservation, research, and education. It's an amazing place to visit any time, but this four-week period offers something extra special. You’ll be directly supporting the students as they develop the skills they need for their future.
