About Filey Golf Club

Description

Filey Golf Club was established in 1897. The original course was situated on land to the north of this fine old North Yorkshire fishing town.

The course moved to its present site on the south side of town two years later. The design of the "new links" is credited to James Braid and examples of his design features can be seen on the course.

It has been suggested that Dr. Alister Mackenzie, during his period of residence in Leeds, made amendments to the original design.

During his period as club professional at nearby Ganton, Harry Vardon would often play challenge matches over the Filey Course with his fellow Channel Islander Fred Beck, the Filey Club Professional.

The course has been modified over the years to take into account modern technology but still retains the original Braid layout.

The purchase of adjoining land has allowed the club to incorporate a 9 hole short course into its facilities. This "Academy" course continues to be developed but is proving popular with beginners and visitors who do not wish to play the main course. (Separate membership is available for the Academy Course at greatly reduced rates to encourage newcomers to our great game.)

The old clubhouse has been replaced with a modern building to cater for the needs of members and visitors.

The welcome you receive at Filey Golf Club has not changed over the years. We hope you will continue to visit our fine Club and Course.

🏌️‍♂️ Filey Golf Club – A Battle with the Elements, a Triumph of Scenery 🌊🌲 My recent round at Filey Golf Club was nothing short of unforgettable. The weather may have been doing its best to knock me sideways—wind whipping, rain teasing—but it only added to the drama of a truly spectacular course. From the very first tee, Filey delivers. The opening stretch takes you high onto the cliff tops, with sweeping views over the bay that are worth pausing for, even if your drive isn’t. There’s something exhilarating about playing with the sea breeze in your face and the North Sea stretching out beside you. Just as you settle into the rhythm, the course shifts—suddenly you're threading shots through pine tree-lined fairways, where the air feels still and the atmosphere changes. It’s a beautiful contrast: from wild coastal exposure to tranquil woodland precision. And then, as if to remind you where you started, the final holes bring you back to the open cliff-top fairways. It’s a poetic loop—wind, trees, and sea again—each section offering its own challenge and charm. Despite the weather’s best efforts to sabotage my swing, Filey Golf Club won me over completely. It’s a course that tells a story with every hole, and I can’t wait to return (hopefully with a bit more sunshine next time!).

A truly amazing golf course! It combines the best of parklands golf with links golf. Designed by Dr Alistair McKenzie it lets you think you are playing well before teaching you lessons! You will lose golf balls no matter how good you think you are! Nothing is what you think! 190 yds is actually 220! Even downhill! It's a masterpiece in golf course design! Every day has different conditions so you have to play accordingly. Put the ball above the trees and it will move two fairways across if there's a sea fret! Club up and punch them low! Best of luck! Enjoy the combination of park and links! Great course!

Superb place to play golf, we did the 9 hole course, twice it was that good. 9 hole's, a pint and another 9 hole's 🤷 what's not to love about that? We will definitely be back but, we'll be playing the big boys course 😉

Tuesday 2nd September 2025. Played as part of Scarborough Golf Festival. In the hottest year, when most courses have "burnt off" Filey was lush green grass throughout the course. Tees & fairways excellent. Green amazing, not a blemish on any green, fast even pace, putts ran true, very fast downhill. Tough to score. Clubhouse & pro shop staff excellent. Superbly well organised competition.

Had an awesome morning playing 18 holes golf for the first time with my son Joe. He’s really improving and we had a perfect day. Thanks to all the staff at Filey Bay for making the course so enjoyable. We will definitely be back again one day soon.
