Welcome to Yorkshire
News • July 16th, 2024
|In a significant step towards wildlife conservation, two specialist dogs, Rocket and Fudge, from the not-for-profit organization Dogs 4 Wildlife, recently visited Yorkshire Wildlife Park. This visit aimed to familiarize them with the wildlife they will eventually help protect in South Africa.

Introduction to Dogs 4 Wildlife
Dogs 4 Wildlife is dedicated to providing highly trained dogs and specialized ranger training to develop anti-poaching canine units across Sub-Saharan Africa. The organization, founded by Darren Priddle and Jacqui Law, not only focuses on conservation but also aims to inspire the next generation of wildlife protectors through effective education.
The Poaching Crisis in Southern Africa
The urgency of this mission cannot be overstated, as poaching has dramatically increased in parts of Southern Africa. Reports indicate that around 499 rhinos were poached last year, with an average of one rhino being killed every 16 hours. The increase in poaching activities underscores the critical need for effective countermeasures.
Training and Familiarization at Yorkshire Wildlife Park
During their visit to Yorkshire Wildlife Park, Rocket, a 15-month-old fox red Labrador, and Fudge, a 2-year-old cocker spaniel, were exposed to various animals they will protect in the future. They met rhinos, giraffes, zebras, and leopards, allowing them to become accustomed to the sights and smells of these endangered species. Such familiarization trips are essential for their training, ensuring they can effectively operate in their future environments.
Impact of Dogs 4 Wildlife
Dogs 4 Wildlife has successfully deployed over 15 dogs across Southern Africa. These specialist dogs, bred and trained in Carmarthenshire, have significantly reduced poaching incidents, contributing to a decrease of up to 75%. This reduction is crucial in the conservation efforts for rhinos and other endangered species.
Quotes from the Founders
Darren Priddle expressed the organization's mission: "Dogs 4 Wildlife is a passion-led organization aiming to inspire future generations and protect our planet's diverse wildlife. We are grateful to Yorkshire Wildlife Park for allowing our dogs access to such a diverse environment, crucial for their development."
Jacqui Law added:
"Visiting Yorkshire Wildlife Park, which shares our passion for animal conservation, was a great honor. Together, we aim to conserve as many animals as possible for future generations."
Yorkshire Wildlife Park’s Commitment
Neville Williams, Director of Yorkshire Wildlife Park, emphasized the park's dedication to conservation.
"Yorkshire Wildlife Park places conservation at the heart of all activities, working closely with the Wildlife Foundation. It was exciting to meet the dogs and learn about their future roles in conservation."
Future Plans
Looking ahead, Dogs 4 Wildlife plans to deploy more dogs to Sub-Saharan Africa, including Rocket and Fudge. These efforts are part of the broader strategy to combat poaching and protect endangered wildlife.
