|Home Bargains is making big moves again! They’re building a brand-new, massive Distribution Centre in Doncaster, aiming to boost their supply chain and keep their prices low across the UK. This project isn’t just about expanding their business — it’s about creating jobs, using smart tech, and making things more efficient. Here’s everything you need to know.

Why This New Distribution Centre Is A Big Deal
So, here’s the scoop. Home Bargains has teamed up with McLaren Construction, one of the UK's top contractors known for handling big commercial projects. The groundbreaking ceremony for this huge facility happened on March 21, 2025, and they’re planning to have it all set up and working by mid-2028. That’s pretty fast for a project this size!
When finished, the site will be roughly 1 million square feet. Yep, that’s like stacking about 17 football fields side by side. And it’s not just big — it’s clever, too. The building will be fully automated thanks to WITRON’s high-tech order picking systems, making this place one of the most automated operations in the entire UK.
What Makes This Distribution Centre So Special?
This isn’t just a big warehouse. It’s designed to be super-efficient and sustainable. Here’s what makes it stand out:
- High-Tech Automation: Once McLaren Construction finishes their part, WITRON will come in to install their fancy automated systems. Think of robots zooming around, picking and packing goods like a well-choreographed dance.
- Massive Storage Capacity: The setup will include 470,000 storage locations, 104 stacker cranes, and over 15 kilometres of conveyor belts. All of this tech is made by WITRON in Parkstein, Germany.
- Green Goals: The facility is also designed to cut down on CO2 emissions, reduce waste, and use space as smartly as possible.
- More Jobs: Once it’s up and running, the new centre will create around 1,000 jobs in the Doncaster area. That’s a lot of people getting back to work!
How This Fits Into Home Bargains’ Bigger Plans
If you’re a fan of Home Bargains’ low prices and huge selection, this new centre is good news. They’re already planning to expand from their current 600 stores to somewhere between 800 and 1,000 and grow their staff from 28,500 to 35,000.
The Doncaster centre will look a lot like their other distribution hub in St Helens, which is scheduled to go live in May 2025. Just like in Doncaster, everything from receiving goods to loading trucks will be automated and run by WITRON’s clever warehouse management system.
Why Doncaster?
This new centre isn’t just randomly placed. It’s part of the Unity Yorkshire regeneration project, which aims to turn the area into a buzzing hub for business and jobs. It’s also positioned right next to the M18/M180 motorway interchange, making it super convenient for transport and delivery.
What The Big Names Are Saying
Stuart Goss, Operations Director at McLaren Construction, seems thrilled about the project. He said:
“We are thrilled to break ground on this major project for T J Morris Ltd. This development is a testament to our expertise in delivering high-specification logistics facilities that drive business growth and regional economic development.”
And Duncan Pointon, WITRON’s UK Sales Manager, added:
“In addition to the benefits for consumers in the stores, a decisive criterion for TJ Morris was also the focus on the employees who will work with WITRON technology in the logistics centre in the future. They will benefit from state-of-the-art, ergonomic workstations, which is an enormous competitive advantage in times of labour shortages.”
The Bottom Line
Home Bargains isn’t just building a giant warehouse — they’re putting together a high-tech, super-efficient system that’s going to make shopping cheaper and faster for everyone. And with over 1,000 jobs on the way, Doncaster’s about to get a big boost.
Keep an eye out for the opening in mid-2028. If you’re in the area, it might even be your next workplace!
