|Keeping the family busy during the Easter holidays can feel like a mission, especially one that doesn't empty your wallet. But for anyone around Wakefield, the problem is officially solved. Wakefield Council has put together an amazing two-week programme of completely free, family-friendly activities designed to bring some serious fun to the Easter break. Running from 30 March to 11 April 2026, the Easter Egg-stravaganza is taking over local markets across the district, offering everything from classic egg hunts to Jedi training. It’s a brilliant opportunity for families to get out, have a laugh, and make some lasting memories without spending a penny. And the best part? There’s no need to book for any of it.
An egg-cellent adventure across the district
The centrepiece of the holiday fun is the Easter Egg-stravaganza, a massive celebration happening at several local markets. This is where the traditional Easter spirit really comes alive. Families can join in on classic egg hunts, which are always a massive hit. Imagine the kids racing around the market stalls, solving clues, and getting that buzz of finding a hidden egg. It’s proper, old-school fun. Beyond the hunts, the programme includes a whole range of entertainment. There will be creative workshops where everyone can get their hands dirty making brilliant Easter crafts, and even a mini-farm for little ones to meet some cute animals. It's a chance to get up close with fluffy chicks and maybe even see the Easter Bunny’s four-legged friends. Of course, the main man himself, the Easter Bunny, will be hopping by some of the locations for a special appearance. It's the perfect chance for a memorable photo. This fantastic programme of events is designed to offer a variety of fun for all ages.
The Easter fun is spread across the district on these specific days:
Ossett Market – Tuesday 31 March
Pontefract Market – Wednesday 1 April
Wakefield Market – Friday 3 April
South Elmsall Market – Saturday 4 April
Castleford Market – Saturday 4 April
Crazy golf and giant games at Castleford market
While the fun is district-wide, Castleford Market is set to be a major hub for some incredible activities. One of the standout attractions returning is the much-loved crazy golf course. This isn't just for the kids; with putters of all sizes available, it's genuinely fun for the entire family. Whether it's a bit of friendly competition between siblings or a chance for Mum and Dad to show off their putting skills, the crazy golf is a guaranteed good time. The course will be open for multiple sessions across the first week of the holidays, making it easy to find a time to pop down and have a go. Alongside this, there will be a selection of giant games. Think massive Jenga towers that wobble precariously or a huge Connect 4 that requires a bit of strategy. These interactive games are brilliant for getting families to play together and enjoy some simple, screen-free entertainment. All of these fantastic family-friendly activities are completely free, providing brilliant value entertainment for local communities.
The crazy golf sessions at Castleford Market are scheduled as follows:
Monday 30 March – 10am to 3pm
Tuesday 31 March – 10am to 3pm
Wednesday 1 April – 10am to 1pm
Thursday 2 April – 10am to 3pm
Friday 3 April – 10am to 3pm
May the fun be with you
Just when it seems the Easter programme couldn't get any better, something truly out of this galaxy is planned. On Saturday, 11 April, Castleford Market will host a special Star Wars meet and greet. This amazing event is being run by the Pheonix Squad, a group known for their incredible costumes and performances. Fans will get the chance to meet some of their favourite characters from the iconic franchise. Whether someone is a fan of the Jedi or has a soft spot for the dark side, seeing these characters up close is an unforgettable experience. But it gets even better. The day also includes light sabre workshops. This is a dream come true for any young Padawan (or even an older Jedi master). The workshops will teach the ways of the Force and the art of wielding a lightsaber. It's a unique, interactive experience that is sure to be one of the highlights of the Easter holidays, providing exciting entertainment that will create lasting memories for all who attend.
Bringing everyone together for free
This entire two-week programme is about more than just filling the holiday schedule. It’s about strengthening communities. Cllr Jack Hemingway, Wakefield Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Growth, highlighted the importance of these events:
“We are delighted to bring this exciting programme of events to our local markets this Easter. Events like these bring our communities together and help to energise our town centres. This is a fantastic opportunity for families to enjoy free entertainment and create lasting memories. There are plenty of activities to choose from, so we encourage everyone to join in the fun and enjoy everything the markets have to offer.”
His words perfectly capture the spirit of the Easter Egg-stravaganza. It’s a chance for people to connect, for town centres to buzz with activity, and for families to enjoy quality time together. The fact that all the activities are completely free is a massive bonus. In times when every penny counts, having access to such a wide range of high-quality, fun entertainment with no need to book is a huge help for parents and carers. Just turn up and join in the fun. Simple as that.
