|The HACS Harrogate Music Festival is set to kick off this weekend, marking its 60th anniversary with an exciting performance by the acclaimed South African musician Abel Selaocoe. The concert will take place at Ashville College on 6 June, starting at 7:30 pm, and promises to be a remarkable start to a month-long celebration of music.
Abel Selaocoe: A Rising Star
Abel Selaocoe is not just any musician; he is a genre-defying cellist and singer who has captured the attention of audiences worldwide. Since his stunning debut at the BBC Proms in 2021, Selaocoe has been redefining what classical music can be. His performances blend classical, traditional, and jazz influences, creating a unique sound that resonates with many. This concert at the Harrogate Music Festival will be his only performance in the North of England this summer, making it a special opportunity for local music lovers.

The Bantu Ensemble
Joining Selaocoe on stage will be the Bantu Ensemble, a group he formed in 2022. The Ensemble is known for its innovative approach to music, often changing their programmes for each performance. They create a unique musical experience by combining African heritage with Western classical music. This means that no two concerts are the same, and audiences can expect to hear something new and exciting each time.
A Celebration of Cultures
Speaking about his upcoming performance, Selaocoe expressed his excitement, stating, “My music is about connection – between cultures, traditions, voices and rhythms from across the world.” He aims to bring together storytelling, improvisation, and the energy of live performance to create a joyful experience for everyone in attendance. This concert is not just a performance; it’s an opportunity to celebrate the beauty of diversity in music.
What to Expect at the Festival
The Harrogate Music Festival is renowned for bringing together some of the biggest names in classical music. This year, the festival is particularly special as it celebrates its 60th anniversary. According to Sharon Canavar, Chief Executive of Harrogate International Festivals, the festival aims to change perceptions of classical music through performances that thrill audiences. “We are delighted to welcome Abel and the Bantu Ensemble to Harrogate. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate our 60th anniversary and get our exciting summer season off to a flying start,” she said.
