Big news for anyone in Yorkshire who loves a good story. That cracking little theatre festival, Short + Sweet Yorkshire, is making a comeback to Harrogate in August 2026. After a hugely popular debut in 2024, the festival is returning to give the whole region another dose of brilliant, bite-sized theatre. It's all about celebrating grassroots creativity and opening up the stage to absolutely everyone, from seasoned pros to people who’ve just scribbled their first idea on a napkin. Supported by Creative Harrogate and The Writers Collective, this event is shaping up to be a massive boost for the local arts scene, offering fresh opportunities for writers, directors, and performers.

So what’s the big idea?

Imagine going to the theatre, but instead of one long play, you get to see a whole bunch of different stories, all in one night. That’s the magic of Short + Sweet Yorkshire. It's part of a global festival phenomenon, known as the world's biggest little play festival, that happens in cities all over the planet. The rules are simple: every play has to be just 10 minutes long. That’s it. This zippy 10-minute format means you get a whirlwind of comedy, drama, and everything in between. It’s perfect for today’s world – fast, fun, and full of surprises.

This festival isn't just for the audience, though. It’s a massive playground for creative people. Think about it. If you're a writer with a brilliant idea, you don’t need to spend two years crafting a full-length epic. You can write a powerful, punchy 10-minute script and see it come to life on stage. This approach gives new voices a chance to be heard and lets established professional creatives experiment with new ideas without massive pressure. It’s all about giving people a platform in the Yorkshire region.

Absolutely anyone can have a go

Here’s the best bit. When they say it's open to all, they really mean it. A key principle of the festival is that there are no barriers to entry. You don’t need a fancy agent or a long list of credits to your name. Whether you're a student in Leeds who secretly wants to be a director, a retired factory worker from Sheffield with a story to tell, or an experienced actor from York looking for a new challenge, the doors are open. The festival is a proper community event for the whole region.

This focus on accessibility is what makes the whole thing so exciting. Co-producer Fiona Georgiou Hunt, a scriptwriter and creative director, explained why this is so important:

“2024 was the first time Short + Sweet came to Yorkshire. It started as a test and proved incredibly popular, which really showed us there’s a strong appetite here for new writing and grassroots theatre. Building on that, we’re now developing the festival in partnership with The Writers Collective and Creative Harrogate through its community outreach, using the Short + Sweet global model.

What’s key is that there are no barriers to entry. It’s open to all and genuinely welcoming to anyone who wants to get involved. There’s a real joy that comes from levelling the playing field in the arts. When you remove the barriers, you get a much more exciting mix of voices and ideas, of emerging and professional creatives working side by side, developing work, trying things out. The ten-minute format makes it really easy to experiment, whether that’s companies testing material in development or people taking their first steps into theatre as writers, directors or performers.”

This approach creates a melting pot of talent. It means emerging writers can learn from experienced directors, and brand-new performers get to share a stage with seasoned pros. It’s this mix that creates a really special buzz and leads to some truly original work.

Who is behind the festival?

The 2026 festival is being put together by a team deeply passionate about Yorkshire’s local arts scene. Co-producers Lucy Gillespie, a writer and director, and Fiona Georgiou Hunt bring a wealth of experience to the project. They are backed by two brilliant organisations that are all about nurturing creativity in the community.

  • Creative Harrogate: This is a community arts hub dedicated to making Harrogate a buzzing centre for the creative industries. They support artists and makers across the region, connecting them with the wider community and helping to get great projects off the ground. Their involvement ensures the festival is firmly rooted in the local area.

  • The Writers Collective: This organisation is a lifeline for writers at all stages of their careers. From those just starting out to established authors, The Writers Collective provides support, workshops, and opportunities to help them improve their craft and get their work out there. Their partnership is fantastic news for all the aspiring writers in Yorkshire.

Together, this team is focused on one thing: creating meaningful opportunities for people in the region to tell their stories and develop their skills. The festival isn't just a series of plays; it’s an investment in the creative future of the community.

Why this is brilliant for Yorkshire

A festival like this does more than just entertain. It strengthens the entire creative ecosystem of a region. It gives writers a deadline and a reason to finish that script. It gives directors a chance to work with new performers. It gives actors a stage to shine on. And it gives audiences a night out where they can see bold, original stories they won’t find anywhere else. The success of the 2024 debut proved that people in Yorkshire are hungry for this kind of grassroots creativity.

By bringing together emerging talent and professional creatives, Short + Sweet Yorkshire builds connections and sparks collaborations that can last long after the festival is over. It’s a celebration of new voices and a reminder that amazing art doesn't just happen in London – it’s being made right here in our community. The August 2026 event in Harrogate will showcase the fantastic creative spirit of the entire region. People interested in taking part, whether as writers, directors, or performers, should keep an eye on the festival's linktree:
