Considered by many to be one of the best golf courses in Yorkshire, Hornsea Golf Course is both fair and demanding to golfers of all ability.
The design of the current course, which opened in 1908, was by Alex (Sandy) Herd the Open Champion of 1902. In addition to this in 1912, Dr. Alistair Mackenzie, the renowned golf architect from Leeds, who designed, among others, Alwoodley, Royal Melbourne, Cyprus Point, Pebble Beach and most famously the Augusta National was brought in to make further changes. Subsequent alterations were made, with particular reference to the bunkering on the course, when in 1925 James Braid the 5 time winner of the Open was invited to the Club. The latest, notably to the 13th hole, were made in the early 1990s. The club has recently engaged Howard Swan, the internationally renowned golf course architect, to make recommendations on the set-up of the course, as part of our ongoing course improvement plan.
The picturesque course is set in secluded parkland and offers you a challenging round of golf with mature fairways and superb greens. Our greens staff ensure the course is kept in a very good condition throughout the year and is rarely on temporary greens and never played of mats. The course is a traditional links design, with the first seven holes running outward towards the iconic water tower. A double loop of five holes, including the signature hole, 11th, brings the golfer to Hornsea’s famous inward stretch, possibly the finest six finishing holes in the county. Being situated on the Yorkshire coast, the course has many features associated with links golf, including extensive gorse and wind-blasted thorn. The terrain is gently undulating parkland with extensive tree belts to shelter the golfer from the stiff breezes, which are commonplace at seaside courses.
There are two practice ranges, one of which is generally in use by the professional for coaching and a large practice putting green and chipping area. There is a fully-stocked Pro Shop offering a superb range of golf equipment, clothing and accessories, where in addition you can also improve your game with help from our experienced and friendly club professional.
What could be better than after the game of golf to relax and unwind in the Club’s sports bar or the lounge. It’s in the clubhouse where you will meet friendly people from all walks of life and whilst in one of the bars or the restaurant area you can be sure of the very best service from our staff. Whether as a Golf Society or just a casual visitor, you can enjoy wonderful golf and great hospitality in really attractive surroundings. Our facilities are ideal for golf away-days or private celebrations of any kind – including parties and wedding receptions.
Visitors can be assured of a warm welcome and a memorable golfing experience at Hornsea Golf Club - we look forward to meeting you.

⛳ Hornsea Golf Club – A Hidden Gem on the East Coast I recently had the pleasure of playing Hornsea Golf Club, and it’s safe to say I’ll be back. The layout is a real treat — with a great mix of challenges and scenic flow. Each hole feels distinct, yet the course maintains a lovely rhythm that keeps you engaged from tee to green. The greens were in excellent condition: true, consistent, and well-paced. Whether you're lining up a birdie putt or scrambling to save par, they reward a confident stroke. Beyond the course itself, the atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming. It’s the kind of place where you feel at ease, whether you're chasing a low score or just soaking in the surroundings. Hornsea offers that rare blend of playability and character — a course that’s enjoyable for all levels but still keeps you thinking. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy a quality round in East Yorkshire. A proper coastal classic.
Brilliant golf course especially as it was bone dry. Groundsmen have the course I a beautiful condition considering. Tough challenge for all abilities but a real leveller. Nice breakfast and lovely clubhouse.
Walked past the actual course while out walking around for a couple of hours. Then on our way back to the cabin walked past the clubhouse, called in for a pint, very welcoming staff and club members all the people we met were friendly 😀
Lovely golf course, at 6,400 yards off the yellows it’s still a nice steady walk
Day 2 of our Tour. This was a step up from yesterday. A longer course larger and faster greens. Wide fairways. Everything was in spristine condition. The 2nd cut was deep enough for your ball to sink into and strong enough to make an escape difficult. Undulating fairways was taken to a different level. I'm sure it is a throwback to a time when the strategy was used to stop small aircraft from landing. It didn't spoil our enjoyment but added another element of difficulty. The Pro shop was helpfully efficient and friendly.
