New Exhibition 'For the Love of Textiles' Opens at Sunny Bank Mills Until June 2026

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on May 27th, 2026

A new exhibition has opened at Sunny Bank Mills in Farsley, showcasing the deep connections between textiles, memory, and love. Titled For the Love of Textiles, this display runs until 28th June 2026 and is free to visit. It features a variety of textile art and cherished objects, all telling stories of love in its many forms.

Exploring Love Through Textiles

The exhibition dives into how textiles can represent love, not just in romantic relationships but also in family bonds, cherished memories, creativity, and community ties. Visitors can expect a rich tapestry of emotions, from joy to heartbreak, reflected in the artworks and items on display.

Among the highlights are:

  • Contemporary artworks that express personal stories

  • Childhood keepsakes that evoke nostalgia

  • Handmade quilts that show the time and effort put into crafting

  • Knitted football jerseys that connect fans with their teams

  • Archival pieces that have never been seen by the public before

At the centre of the exhibition is a stunning collection of wedding outfits, which acts as a focal point for the concepts of love and memory.

A Labour of Love

Anna Turzynski, the Arts Director at Sunny Bank Mills, shared her enthusiasm for the exhibition, stating:

“I love this exhibition. Mainly because it has been a labour of love, pulling in favours from neighbours, friends and colleagues to create the centrepiece collection of wedding outfits.”

She emphasised that this exhibition has allowed them to explore textiles in a fresh way, combining contemporary art with historical pieces.

Turzynski expressed her gratitude for the community involvement:

“I am so honoured to display so many treasured items and feel so grateful to everyone for trusting us.”

She hopes that visitors will connect with the exhibition on a personal level, discovering how love and textiles intertwine through various objects.

Celebrating Cultural Heritage

A significant contribution to the exhibition comes from the Leeds Gypsy and Traveller Exchange (Leeds GATE). They have provided a wedding dress and bridesmaid’s outfit that are part of the exhibition’s highlights, coinciding with Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller History Month in June.

Rachel Trafford, the Communications Team Leader at Leeds GATE, remarked on the importance of showcasing their cultural heritage:

“Being part of For the Love of Textiles exhibition is a brilliant opportunity to continue our cultural heritage work in the region.”

She noted that it is particularly meaningful to display these garments at a time when cultural narratives can often be misunderstood or misrepresented.

Trafford also highlighted the bravery of a member who donated her wedding dress:

“We thank her and her family for their kind generosity. We hope people can see these dresses for what they are; treasured items that represent personal and beautiful memories of love and family.”

Contemporary Voices in Textile Art

The exhibition also features contemporary artists who bring new perspectives to the art of textiles. One of these artists is Nicole Chui, an embroiderer whose work focuses on emotional expression through stitching. Chui expressed her pride in being part of such a meaningful exhibition:

“It’s great to see the love of textiles embraced in a location where there is a profound legacy.”

She further explained that her work goes beyond simple technique, aiming to represent the “beautiful mess of raw expression and embracing lived experiences through the form of embroidery.” Chui believes that while textiles have a rich history, their future is still being shaped by contemporary artists.

Visiting the Exhibition

For the Love of Textiles is located in the Gallery at the Sandsgate Building of Sunny Bank Mills, which is considered one of the most exciting cultural hubs in Yorkshire. The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm, and will run until 28th June 2026. Visitors can enjoy this unique showcase free of charge, making it an accessible way to engage with art and local heritage.
