Welcome to Yorkshire

•A pair of life-size lion sculptures have made a grand entrance at the award-winning Yorkshire Wildlife Park, taking centre stage in a heartwarming charity campaign. These vibrant sculptures, crafted by talented local artists, are part of an initiative to raise essential funds for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity. This exciting project is not just about art; it's about making a real difference in the community.
Celebrating a Milestone
The launch of the Pride of Yorkshire trail took place on Tuesday, marking an important milestone as Sheffield Children’s Hospital celebrates its 150th birthday. To commemorate this significant event, a total of 150 lion and lioness sculptures will be displayed throughout the region, from Sheffield to Barnsley, Rotherham, and Doncaster. This artistic trail aims to engage the public and encourage them to explore their local areas while supporting a worthy cause.
Support from the Park
John Minion, the CEO of the Yorkshire Wildlife Park, expressed pride in hosting two of the lion sculptures as part of the fundraising effort:
“The lion sculptures are magnificent and look amazing with the rest of the pride. We expect they will become park favourites just like our real-life lions.”
The park, located near Doncaster, is home to its own pride of lions and has been actively involved in supporting animal welfare and conservation efforts.
Helping Animals in Need
The Yorkshire Wildlife Park is not only a fun destination for families but also a leader in animal conservation. The park has been part of several rescue missions, providing safe homes for at-risk lions. Recently, lions named Oleg, Rafael, and Shanti were rescued from war-torn Ukraine and transported over 1,700 miles to their new home at the park. Alongside them are lion cubs Felix, Javari, and Nala, who are now one year old, as well as lioness Aysa and her three cubs, Teddi, Santa, and Emi, all of whom were also rescued from Ukraine in 2024.
Community Involvement
The rescues and ongoing conservation efforts are coordinated by the WildLife Foundation, a charity based at the park. This organisation is dedicated to promoting biodiversity and improving animal welfare through various projects. The foundation’s work not only helps animals but also fosters dynamic communities that appreciate and support wildlife conservation.
A Day Out at the Park
The Pride of Yorkshire trail is a fantastic opportunity for the community to come together, support the Sheffield Children’s Hospital, and enjoy the beauty of art and nature. As the lion sculptures begin to appear around the region, excitement is building, and it is expected that both locals and visitors will respond enthusiastically to this vibrant campaign. With each lion spotted, participants will not only enjoy a fun adventure but also contribute to a cause that is making a real difference in the lives of children in need.
