Yorkshire Wildlife Park Welcomes New Animals This Half-Term Holiday

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on May 28th, 2026

This half-term holiday, visitors to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park (YWP) will be thrilled with the arrival of several new animals, adding to the park's impressive collection of rare and endangered species. As part of its mission to promote global conservation, education, and awareness, YWP is unveiling animals from six different species, including newly settled residents in a specially designed reserve.

New Arrivals at the Park

The park is excited to introduce a trio of Lar Gibbons to their newly created Malaysian Singing Forest Gibbon Reserve. These captivating creatures will be joined by a Red Panda, an Okapi calf, Northern Cheetah cubs, an infant Titi monkey, and a pair of capybaras named Chip and Dale, who are now part of the Amazonas walkthrough.

The three Lar Gibbons are led by Gale, a remarkable 50-year-old who is among the oldest of her kind in the world. She is accompanied by 18-year-old Manis and ten-year-old Koopa, who have recently moved to the park from a zoo in Cumbria. Gibbons are small apes found in tropical rainforests, and they are known for their strong family bonds and unique vocal duets.

Importance of Conservation

All 20 species of gibbons are at risk of extinction, primarily due to threats like deforestation from palm oil production, logging, and the illegal wildlife trade. "We are delighted to see the three new gibbons out and about," said Dr Charlotte MacDonald, YWP’s Director of Animals. "The reserve is named after their haunting, melodic calls, which often occur in the form of early morning duets." She noted that Gale and Manis spend a lot of time grooming each other, while Koopa tends to be more independent.

Gale has played an essential role in the European Endangered Species Programme and can be easily recognised by her flowing blonde coat. Dr MacDonald added, "They have settled in well at the Park since arriving in April," highlighting the importance of YWP’s efforts in creating a safe haven for these remarkable animals.

Exciting Attractions and Activities

The 175-acre Yorkshire Wildlife Park, celebrated as the UK’s number one walkthrough wildlife adventure, offers visitors a chance to see not only the new arrivals but also other incredible species. Guests can come face to face with animals such as Polar Bears, Black Rhinos, Giraffes, and African Painted Dogs as they explore the park.

Throughout the half-term week, daily ranger talks and feeding sessions will provide unique opportunities to learn more about the animals and their behaviours. This adds an interactive element to the visit, making it both educational and entertaining.

  • Live entertainment shows include:

    • Victor and Friends

    • Pirates of Pantaloon Bay

    • Indiana Bones Adventure

  • A special immersive experience, Pangea, features over 30 life-sized moving and roaring dinosaurs.

Supporting Conservation Efforts

The half-term activities coincide with the annual ‘Love your Zoo and Love Your Aquarium’ week, organised by the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA). This event recognises the outstanding work of its members, including YWP, focusing on breeding programmes for endangered species, world-leading scientific research, and educational initiatives that connect people with nature.

Cheryl Williams, Trustee of the Yorkshire Wildlife Foundation, expressed excitement about the new arrivals: "Visitors will love seeing these beautiful and beguiling animals take their place alongside the unique collection of species." She emphasised that the new Singing Forest reserve embodies everything the foundation stands for: conservation, education, and meaningful action. "Through the WildLife Foundation’s support, the Park is providing a home for these incredible animals while also raising awareness of the urgent challenges they face in the wild," she said.

Visitor Experience

YWP is also home to the luxurious Hex Wildlife Hotel and the Yorkshire Hive, a shopping, dining, and entertainment destination that features the immersive Evolution restaurant and the Wild Cafe Bistro. The café has a stunning beer garden where visitors can relax and enjoy views of gibbons, bush dogs, and tapirs as they play in their reserves.

With so many new and exciting attractions, Yorkshire Wildlife Park promises an unforgettable experience for families and wildlife enthusiasts alike this half-term. The park continues to play a vital role in conservation efforts while providing engaging and educational experiences for everyone who visits.
