•Wakefield’s Thornes Park Stadium has had a major makeover and is now the perfect place for everyone from beginners to pros. With a new all weather running track it’s ideal for casual joggers and serious runners whatever the time of year.

A home for local athletes
The upgrades aren’t just the track. There’s an entire Athletics Village with facilities for all sports. Whether you’re into the hammer throw, high jump, long jump or even the steeplechase, Thornes Park has got you covered. With LED floodlights it’s now safer and easier to train in the evenings or dark winter months.
For everyone
Accessibility was a key consideration in this upgrade. The hammer cage and shot put area now have dedicated access points so all athletes can use the space. Thornes Park isn’t just about competition; it’s about sport for everyone in the Wakefield community.
Get active
Cllr Hannah Appleyard, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, hopes these facilities will get more people active. She says Thornes Park can provide physical and mental health benefits for everyone in the community to live a more active life.
Interested? Both Wakefield Harriers and Wakefield Triathlon Club now use the new track and they’d love to have you join. It’s a great way to meet others, train and get fit in a friendly environment.
