|Cllr Karl Johnson is poised to become the new Leader of Wakefield Council, with his official confirmation set to take place at the Annual Council Meeting on Wednesday, 20 May. This follows a successful election campaign that saw the Reform UK party secure 58 seats on the council, marking a significant shift in local governance.
Cllr Karl Johnson’s Background
Cllr Johnson, who represents the Stanley and Outwood East ward, has deep roots in Wakefield, having lived there for most of his life. He previously served on the council from 2019 to 2023, representing the Wakefield South ward. His experience as a local business owner and former music teacher gives him a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing the community.

“We’re going to be working flat out to deliver for everyone in our district,” Cllr Johnson stated. He emphasised that the focus will be on getting the basics right, such as improving roads and public spaces, and ensuring that council services provide good value for money. This commitment to the community reflects his desire to restore pride in local areas.
Cllr John Thomas as Deputy Leader
Supporting Cllr Johnson in his new role will be Cllr John Thomas, who has been elected as Deputy Leader of the Council. Cllr Thomas represents the Altofts and Whitwood ward and brings a wealth of experience from 28 years in warehousing and logistics. His background includes expertise in supply chain logistics, public sector procurement, and data analysis.
“I’m looking forward to being part of a strong leadership team that focuses every day on making life better for every resident,” Cllr Thomas said. He has been actively engaging with the community, speaking to thousands of residents about the changes they wish to see in local governance.
Community Engagement and Future Plans
The new leadership team intends to adopt a more transparent approach to council operations. Both Cllrs Johnson and Thomas have stressed the importance of listening to the community and involving residents in decision-making processes. This is particularly relevant in light of the recent elections, where feedback from the public played a crucial role in shaping their campaign strategies.
Commitment to Community: Both leaders have expressed their dedication to prioritising the needs of Wakefield and the Five Towns in every decision.
Value for Money: They plan to review council spending to eliminate waste and ensure that tax money is used effectively.
Public Spaces Improvement: Enhancing local infrastructure, including roads and parks, will be a key focus area.
Looking Ahead
The upcoming Annual Council Meeting not only marks the confirmation of Cllr Johnson and Cllr Thomas but also serves as a platform for their vision for Wakefield's future. They aim to build a positive environment that harnesses the district's potential while addressing immediate concerns.
The leaders are currently in the process of selecting a senior leadership team, known as the Cabinet, which will help implement their plans. The Cabinet will consist of elected members who will work alongside Cllr Johnson and Cllr Thomas to ensure that the council operates effectively and responsively.
Public Participation
Residents are encouraged to attend the Annual Council Meeting in person or watch the livestream. This event provides a valuable opportunity for the community to engage with their new leaders and stay informed about local governance.
As Wakefield embarks on this new chapter under Cllr Karl Johnson’s leadership, the focus will be on collaboration, transparency, and a commitment to making the district a better place for all its residents. With a clear vision and a strong leadership team, there is optimism about the positive changes that lie ahead for Wakefield and its communities.
