Walk: Wentbridge
An easy woodland trek following the River Went and under the Wentbridge Flyover which carries four lanes of the A1, just near Pontefract. The image below shows the Ackworth rail viaduct, just along the River Went from Wentbridge. From where you have parked, head towards the junction with Wentbridge Lane in the middle of the village. Just to the left of the road direction sign is a public footpath sign. Follow the arrow to walk along the path, past the white house on the right. Once past the building, the walk opens out to fields, before a wood springs up on the left. Ignore the path to the left, just as you skirt around the edge of a wood on your right now. By now, the epic Wentbridge Viaduct, which takes the A1(M) over the River Went, should be in view and earshot. Walk towards - and under - the viaduct, following the path along the edge of the wood, called Sayle’s Plantation. The path enters the wood, and eventually turns to the right. A fairly straight path carries on through the wood for what seems like forever, until you emerge to just a row of trees on your left. A path branches off to the left here - ignore this as you’ll be coming back that way - and carry straight on into the wood. In the wood, the path turns to the right, and heads in a south-easterly direction for a long while, before emerging into a much more open series of fields, but still with a lot of trees. The path runs alongside a house, and then turns right along a drive to meet Main Street in the village of Kirk Smeaton. At the road, turn left, and then take the footpath to the right of the Shoulder of Mutton pub. Follow the path to the left of the church, and then turn left to walk over the River Went, then turn left onto Chapel Lane. Follow the lane until a path turns into the wood on the left. Follow this path through this wood, exiting to some fields and then carrying on into a small wood, and then into open fields, steadily turning left to cross the River Went again on a footbridge. The path in front of you is the one you took on the outward trek - turn right and retrace your steps under the Wentbridge Viaduct, back to Wentbridge village, and where you parked your car.
Walk: Campsall Country Park
A pleasant stroll around one of Doncaster’s many country parks from the lovely village of Campsall. Please park considerately for local residents. If busy, the main Campsall Country Park car park is off Church Field Road. From wherever you have parked, head towards Back Lane, the road at the left side of the closed Old Bells pub. Turn down Back Lane, with the pub on your right. As the lane turns to the right, follow the public footpath sign as it points straight on. Follow the path on the ground as it bends around to the left roughly along the line of the trees. The path enters a field after crossing over Stream Dyke. Look for the path on the ground towards the clear gap in the wood at the far side and walk to it. Cross the drain and enter the wood. The path crosses through the wood, turning slightly to the left just before you leave the cover of the trees. Follow the line of the hedges on your left, going through the gap in the hedges to the next field. Look for a clearing in the trees on the far side wood and head towards that across the field, which is a public footpath. Once through the trees, turn left to walk along the track to reach Church Field Road. Turn left and walk along the pavement, past Askern Leisure Centre, and turn left in the Campsall Country Park car park. Head out along the path from the far left corner of the car park, straight to the gap in the trees across the field. Follow the path through the wood and then between the lake on the right and a drain on the left. At the south end of the lake, the path turns right, crossing over a footbridge and eventually reaching Back Lane through a gate. Return back to where you have parked. Following this path between the fields to reach Home Farm. Go through the farm and cross over the footbridge, through the wood to reach the village of Boynton. Turn left at the first road and walk through the hedge-lined path into the field. Follow the clear line on the ground towards the wood in the far distance. Keeping the wood on your right, follow the line of the trees to reach a road. Turn right, and then left on the B1253. Carefully follow the B1253, and just after the brick walls of a caravan park, there’s a footpath sign pointing to the left, with a protective fence around the exit. Follow the line of the path on the ground and soon this path becomes the road Eastgate. Continue to follow Eastgate to return to where you are parked.
