It is the most recognizable building in Vatican City. Its 2.3-hectare dome is a prominent feature of the skyline of Rome. In Catholic and Christian traditions, it is regarded as one of the holiest sites. Its titular, St. Peter, who served as the leader of the twelve Apostles of Jesus, the first Bishop of Antioch, and eventually the first Bishop of Rome, making him the first Pope, is traditionally buried there. The construction of the basilica took place from April 18, 1506, and 1615.
