They thrive in rich, moist, well-drained, acid to neutral soil. Before planting, enrich the soil with well-rotted manure or garden compost, mixing it thoroughly and deeply. Shading the roots helps magnolias establish quickly. After planting, mulch with rotted bark chips, manure, or garden compost, avoiding piling it around the stem.
