Motte and bailey castle built on the North side of the River Don to control the ford there at Strafforth Sands. With canal building and because of water extraction the River Don is not as large or fast flowing as it was in the mediaeval period, it has also been suggested that it may have been tidal all the way to Mexborough. In the 11th century it was the manor of Roger de Busli who was the lord of Tickhill and it may have been him who built it. It has been damaged by landscape gardening but there is still a large amount left to see. It is free to visit.
We were a bit late but still managed to be there for the remembrance Sunday
Secure for Kizzy.
