A Man Called Adam Bring Nature, Sound and Art Together at MIMA Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough’s MIMA (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art) will host an extraordinary live event on Tuesday 4 November 2025, as pioneering electronic duo A Man Called Adam present Birdy — an immersive audiovisual experience exploring how birds navigate and adapt within human-altered environments.

This special performance forms part of Remember Nature 2025, a nationwide Day of Action uniting 16 major arts organisations and 18 artists across England to stand up for the planet through creative expression.

Standing up for nature through sound

Led by artists Dr Sally Rodgers and Dr Steve Jones, A Man Called Adam have spent decades shaping electronic music — from early acid jazz and Balearic house classics to recent works deeply rooted in place and ecology. Their latest project, Birdy, invites visitors to slow down, listen deeply, and experience the delicate interplay between the natural world and the sounds of our shared urban landscapes.

The event will take place throughout the day in MIMA’s Pavilion and Garden, creating a meditative space filled with kinetic visuals and sound that evoke the movements and songs of birds adapting to modern habitats.

“Birds are incredible witnesses to change. They respond, relocate, and sing through it all. Birdy is our way of tuning in — of asking how we, too, can adapt, care and pay attention.”

A nationwide day of creative climate action

Remember Nature 2025 marks the 10th anniversary of visionary artist Gustav Metzger’s original Remember Nature project. This year’s programme, curated by Andrea Gregson and Jo Joelson, brings together artists and galleries from across the country — including the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Hatton Gallery, and MIMA here in the North East — to highlight how art can inspire environmental awareness and collective responsibility.

The Day of Action will also include live performances, artist-led walks, workshops, films, and choral events, with all activity streamed via remembernature.art.
