Ever wondered where to find the very best curry in the North East? For fans of top-tier Asian cuisine, all eyes are on Middlesbrough right now. At this year’s prestigious Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards (ARTA) 2025, the title of North East Chef of the Year went to Jolsha, a much-loved restaurant in the heart of the town.

The national ceremony – often dubbed the “Oscars of the curry world” – was held on 6 October at the London Hilton on Park Lane, drawing celebrity guests, MPs, and the finest chefs from across the UK. While the room was packed with famous faces and industry heavyweights, it was Jolsha’s kitchen team from Middlesbrough that brought the North East its moment of glory.

A big win for Middlesbrough’s food scene

Taking home a regional ARTA title is no small feat. The winners are chosen by the public, celebrating restaurants that consistently deliver exceptional food, service, and value. For Jolsha, the award is recognition of years spent perfecting authentic recipes and bringing bold flavours to Teesside diners.

This win puts Middlesbrough firmly on the UK’s culinary map, showcasing that the North East’s vibrant Asian restaurant scene can hold its own against the country’s biggest foodie cities.

About the ARTA Awards

ARTA is the UK’s only national award ceremony decided entirely by diners themselves, shining a spotlight on the restaurants and chefs who go the extra mile to keep their communities well-fed. This year’s event was hosted by TV presenter Samantha Simmonds and magician Paul Martin, with a glittering audience enjoying a night of entertainment and celebration.

More than just an award

ARTA founder Mohammed Munim praised all the winners for their dedication during challenging times for the hospitality sector:

“Heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and finalists of ARTA 2025 – the outstanding Pan Asian restaurants, takeaways, and chefs who continue to set the benchmark for excellence in the UK's hospitality scene.”

For Middlesbrough, the success of Jolsha as North East Chef of the Year is more than just a trophy on the shelf – it’s a proud moment for the town’s food culture and a reason for locals to book a table to taste the award-winning dishes for themselves.
