Something special is happening at Selby Abbey this spring. From Saturday 5th April to Friday 18th April 2025, the Abbey will be transformed into an art gallery for the East Riding Artists Open Exhibition. Known as "Art in the Aisles", this event will showcase a fantastic mix of paintings and 3D artworks from some of the most talented artists in the region.

Selby Abbey

A celebration of Yorkshire’s creative talent

The East Riding Artists (ERA) is one of the biggest artistic communities in the area, with over 100 members spread across East Yorkshire. Their work covers a wide range of styles and materials, from traditional landscapes to contemporary abstract pieces. Visitors to the exhibition can expect to see stunning paintings, unique sculptures, and intricate mixed-media creations—all inspired by life in Yorkshire.

And the best part? Most of the artwork will be available to buy. So, if you find something that speaks to you, you can take home a piece of Yorkshire’s artistic soul.

Why Selby Abbey?

ERA chairman Larry Malkin, a long-time supporter of the arts, explains why this venue is so special:

"The Abbey is a beautiful and prestigious location, and this exhibition will be accessible to all. Selby is a vibrant market town in the heart of Yorkshire, with convenient parking in the centre."

With its breathtaking Gothic architecture and centuries of history, Selby Abbey is the perfect backdrop for an art exhibition. The soaring arches, intricate stained glass, and peaceful atmosphere will add an extra layer of magic to the artwork on display.

Supporting local artists

The East Riding Artists is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the work of local artists, from painters and ceramicists to jewellery-makers and sculptors. They not only provide a platform for creative people to share their work but also help boost the local economy by encouraging people to buy original art.

The group maintains a website where you can explore the work of its members, and they also publish an annual directory that’s freely available across the region.

Plan your visit

If you love art, history, or just exploring new places, then this exhibition is definitely worth a visit. You’ll have the chance to admire beautiful artwork, soak up the atmosphere of Selby Abbey, and maybe even take home a unique piece of art.
