In a heartwarming event on Saturday, 4th July, Love Island star Alex Bowen unveiled a new courtyard at Martin House Children's Hospice in Boston Spa, Yorkshire. This special outdoor space is inspired by the popular TV show and aims to provide a fun and relaxing environment for teenagers facing serious health challenges.

Teenagers’ Ideas Come to Life

The courtyard was designed based on the suggestions of the teenagers who benefit from the hospice’s services. As part of the renovation of Martin House’s teenage wing, known as The Lodge, these young individuals expressed a desire for a "Love Island-style" area. The hospice staff took this idea to heart, creating a space that mirrors the vibrant atmosphere of the show.

Vicki Greensmith, Director of Clinical Services at Martin House, shared her excitement about the project:

“We were incredibly excited to welcome Alex to Martin House. Throughout the design process, we worked closely with the teenagers who use our hospice to understand what was important to them, and a Love Island-style courtyard quickly became one of the most popular ideas.”

Features of the Courtyard

The new courtyard includes several inviting features that encourage socialising and relaxation. Some highlights are:

  • Outdoor kitchen seating

  • Festoon lighting for a warm, cheerful atmosphere

  • A firepit area for gathering and chatting

This area allows young people to spend time with friends, enjoy their hobbies, and experience a sense of independence during their time at the hospice.

A Special Opening Ceremony

During the launch, Alex Bowen, accompanied by his son Abel, cut the ribbon to officially open the courtyard. Meeting the teenagers who contributed to the design was a significant moment for Alex:

“The courtyard lets teenagers be teenagers again. They get to experience so many things through Martin House, and I feel like it’s such important work to do.”

“I feel like I’m at home - it’s very Love Island-esque! It’s got beanbags, just like the ones where I first met and spoke to Liv.”

He even mentioned how the firepit brought back fond memories of the villa, jokingly expecting to be pulled aside for chats just like on the show.

Supporting Young Lives

Martin House Children's Hospice plays a vital role in supporting over 550 children and young people with life-shortening conditions each year across Yorkshire. The hospice provides a range of services, including planned short breaks and emergency care, ensuring that families receive the care they need without any cost. The redevelopment project, known as The BUILD, which includes the new courtyard, has a total investment of £21.9 million aimed at enhancing the facilities for young people and their families.

In addition to the courtyard, The Lodge features a high-spec recording studio, an interactive sensory area, and a gaming zone equipped with accessible controls, all designed to create a welcoming and enjoyable environment for teenagers.

Community's Role in the Hospice

As a charity, Martin House relies heavily on voluntary donations and fundraising to continue its important work. With an annual cost of £13 million to provide these essential services, community support is crucial. The hospice not only cares for children but also offers bereavement support to families who have experienced loss, ensuring that they are not alone during difficult times.

In summary, the new courtyard at Martin House Children’s Hospice, inspired by Love Island, is more than just a fun space; it represents the voices and ideas of the teenagers who use the hospice. It provides them with a place to enjoy their youth, create memories, and connect with others, all while receiving the care they need.
