Published on December 7th, 2025

Manchester’s Christmas markets are brilliant, busy, colourful, and full of festive cheer. But sometimes you want something a little different… something calmer, prettier, and a bit more magical.

Good news: just 40 minutes from Manchester Victoria, there’s a Yorkshire Christmas market that feels like stepping into a European town square.

Welcome to the Piece Hall Christmas Market in Halifax, a stunning Georgian courtyard filled with stalls, twinkling lights, independent shops, and incredible food. It’s one of the easiest and most rewarding festive day trips you can take this season.

Piece Hall Halifax

Getting there is a doddle

Reaching the Halifax Christmas market from Manchester couldn’t be simpler: Train: Manchester Victoria → Halifax

  • Journey time: ~40 minutes
  • Walk from station: 5 minutes
  • Advance singles: from £3.10
  • Open return with Railcard: around £12.59

The route across the South Pennines is gorgeous on a frosty December morning, rolling hills, old stone mills, and misty valleys glinting with winter sunlight. It’s a festive day out before you even arrive.

A grand arrival at the Piece Hall

Stepping inside The Piece Hall feels like walking into a European piazza.

This spectacular Grade I-listed Georgian building is the only one of its kind in the world, a huge open-air courtyard surrounded by elegant stone arcades, balconies, and walkways.

Unlike Manchester’s sprawling street markets, everything here is contained within this breathtaking square. No traffic, no crowds spilling everywhere, just a magical atmosphere in a historic setting.

Entering through its ornate gates genuinely feels like discovering a secret Christmas market hidden away from the world.

What the local shops say

The Piece Hall’s independent shops flourish during market season, and they absolutely love the festive buzz.

The Handmade Gift Shop

Owner Shelly Foster says:
"The markets are always full of joy… the best time to visit is around 4.30pm, just before sunset when everything is glowing."

She also notes that bars and restaurants stay open much later, often with live music, giving the place a relaxed, festive nightlife feel.

Hudson Belle

Lou Harkness-Hudson calls the Piece Hall:
"The most unique, unusual place to come… an excellent community. The markets are crucial for us and really boost footfall. It doesn’t get any busier than this."

Local makers, small retailers, and Yorkshire artisans all come together here, creating a market experience that feels authentic and full of character.

Festive stalls, food, gifts, and fun

Once the market opens, the huge courtyard becomes pure Christmas magic.

Expect to find:

  • Local rum, gin, and craft drinks
  • Yorkshire cheese, chilli oils, chutneys
  • Handmade hats, scarves, and winter wear
  • Christmas ornaments, crafts, and artisan gifts

A traditional carousel and a festive ferris wheel add to the enchanting atmosphere, with panoramic views over the glowing Piece Hall. A giant Christmas tree completes the postcard-perfect scene.

It genuinely feels like being in a Christmas square somewhere in Austria or Germany, without needing a passport.

The food: Yorkshire bratwurst, churros, and more

The food is a highlight, with fewer stalls than Manchester, but every option is top quality.

The star of the show: Yorkshire Bratwurst

From The Sausage Box, this £9 bratwurst is:

  • Locally sourced from Lishman’s of Ilkley
  • Served in a brioche bun
  • Loaded with sauerkraut, pickles, crispy onions, ketchup, mustard

It’s smoky, juicy, and arguably better than your typical German-style bratwurst.

Other food highlights:

  • Yorkshire pudding wrap stall
  • Indian street food
  • Paella
  • Independent restaurants around the square (Italian, wine bars, and more)

And for dessert: churros

£8 for churros + £1 for dipping chocolate
Warm, crispy, cinnamon-sugary perfection. even when the machine battles the winter cold.
