Welcome to Yorkshire
News • July 20th, 2025
|Right, let’s have a chat. The summer holidays are rolling on, and that familiar question pops up: "What are we doing this weekend?" You want something that’ll make everyone happy. The kids want fun, you might want some decent food and a bit of a chill, and maybe there’s a secret history buff or train enthusiast in the family.
Finding an event that ticks all those boxes can feel like a bit of a mission, can’t it? Well, what if I told you there’s a place where you can ride on proper steam engines, munch on amazing local food, and soak up some incredible history all at once? Get ready for A Taste of Yorkshire at the Middleton Railway. It’s a full-on festival of food, fun, and phenomenal heritage, and it’s happening on the 2nd and 3rd of August.

What's on the menu? (Spoiler: loads)
Let's be honest, a good day out often revolves around good food. If you're a bit of a foodie, you’re in for a treat. Forget your standard burger van; this event is bringing together over 25 local stalls. We're talking proper Yorkshire grub. Imagine sinking your teeth into some incredible artisanal cheeses – you know, the kind of crumbly, flavour-packed stuff you can’t get at the supermarket. And for your sweet tooth? There will be stalls piled high with gorgeous cupcakes that look almost too good to eat. Almost.
But it’s not just about cheese and cake. You’ll find stalls with unique spice blends to liven up your home cooking, perfect for remembering your great day out. And for the grown-ups, there's a fantastic selection of locally brewed drinks. Whether you fancy a crisp pint of Yorkshire ale, a refreshing glass of cider, or one of those fancy botanical gins everyone’s talking about, they’ve got you covered. It's a true celebration of everything that makes the food and drink from this part of the world so special. This is way more than just a bite to eat; it's a core part of the whole experience.
More than just a railway
Okay, so the food is sorted. What about the main attraction? This whole festival is set at the Middleton Railway, which is not just any old train line. It’s the world's oldest continuously working railway! And the best part? Your tickets include unlimited rides all day long. You can hop on and off the historic steam and diesel trains as much as you like. The journey itself is a lovely one-mile trip through the leafy, green scenery of Middleton Park. It's gentle enough for grandparents and exciting enough for the little ones.
Think about the magic of climbing aboard a real steam train, hearing the chug of the engine and the toot of the whistle. It's pure nostalgia. And for the real train fans, there’s a special treat. On Saturday, 2nd August, there’s a rare evening service running until 10 pm. Imagine riding through the park as the sun goes down – it’s a totally different atmosphere and a brilliant bit of family fun. This isn't just a trip; it's an adventure powered by magnificent steam engines.
Keeping everyone entertained
A great family event needs great entertainment, and they’ve thought of everything here. There’s going to be live music throughout the day to keep the festival vibe buzzing. For the kids, it’s a dream. They can get stuck into arts and crafts sessions (get ready to bring home a masterpiece for the fridge) and listen to some captivating storytelling. You can just picture them, sitting wide-eyed as they hear tales of old adventures on the railway.
But it's not all for the kids. There are some really cool, unique things for adults and older kids to check out, too. You can meet local authors who have written books celebrating Yorkshire’s rich heritage. It's a great chance to connect with the local culture. Ever heard of sugarcraft artistry? It’s the incredible skill of creating detailed, beautiful models and decorations from sugar. There will be demonstrations, so you can see how these amazing creations are made. It's one of those things that’s fascinating to watch, no matter your age.
A proper piece of history
When you visit the Middleton Railway, you’re literally stepping onto a piece of living history. This place has some serious credentials. It dates all the way back to 1758. To put that in perspective, that’s before Australia was colonised and before the United States was even a country! In 1812, it became the very first railway in the world to use steam locomotives for commercial purposes. That’s a massive claim to fame.
What makes it even more special is that this entire slice of industrial heritage is run by a dedicated team of volunteers. They’re the ones keeping the engines running and the story alive. So, when you buy your tickets and enjoy the day, you’re not just paying for a fun time; you’re contributing to a brilliant cause. You're helping preserve this incredible site for future generations to enjoy. It’s a day of family fun that also supports a vital piece of Yorkshire history.
