Communities Celebrate the Success of Community Rail Week 2026 Across Yorkshire and Humber

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on June 11th, 2026

Communities across the North East, Yorkshire and Humber recently came together to celebrate Community Rail Week 2026, a special initiative aimed at showcasing the importance of local railways and their role in creating more inclusive and connected communities. Organised by the Community Rail Network and sponsored by the Rail Delivery Group, this year’s theme was ‘Journeys for All’, highlighting how railways can help everyone feel welcome and confident when travelling.

What is Community Rail?

Community rail is a grassroots movement that connects people with their local railways. It involves partnerships between community rail groups, station volunteers, and local organisations working together with the rail industry. The aim is to improve stations, build confidence in train travel, promote environmentally friendly journeys, and ensure that rail services meet the needs of local residents.

Celebrating Community Rail Week

This year, Community Rail Week took place from 1–7 June and engaged over 13,000 individuals through various events and activities across Britain. The campaign also reached millions of people online, drawing attention to the work carried out by volunteers and community rail teams throughout the year. The focus was on tackling issues like isolation and improving wellbeing while encouraging sustainable travel.

Highlights of the Week

Several exciting events took place during Community Rail Week, showcasing the positive impact of community rail initiatives:

  • York Railway Station Showcase: On Wednesday 3 June, the Yorkshire Coast Community Rail Partnership, the Bishop Line Community Rail Partnership, and London North Eastern Railway hosted a community rail showcase at York Railway Station. This event featured promotional displays, live music performances, and media engagement, bringing together partners and the public to raise awareness of community rail initiatives.

  • Music Train Event: The Penistone Line Partnership organised a live “Music Train” event on Monday 1 June, which ran between Huddersfield and Silkstone Common. The event included performances by the band Crazy Heart both on board the train and at the Station Inn, creating a lively atmosphere and demonstrating how community rail enhances the travel experience while supporting local artists.

  • Travelling with Confidence Project: The Bishop Line Community Rail Partnership collaborated with the Young Leaders group from the Darlington Association on Disability as part of the Travelling with Confidence project. This initiative helps participants build the skills and confidence needed to use rail services. After their first independent journey from Darlington to Redcar, participants learned how to access support, navigate stations, and find travel information, showcasing the importance of inclusive travel opportunities.

Voices from the Community

Community Rail Network chief executive Jools Townsend expressed the significance of the week:

"Community Rail Week 2026 demonstrated the incredible impact that community rail has in bringing people together and making rail travel more accessible, welcoming, and relevant to people’s lives."

The theme of ‘Journeys for All’ allowed community rail partnerships and volunteers to highlight how local railways can tackle isolation, build confidence, improve wellbeing, and connect people to new opportunities.

Sarah Wells from the Penistone Line Partnership added:

"We’re incredibly proud to have taken part in Community Rail Week as part of this national campaign, celebrating the people and partnerships that make our railways so much more than a means of transport. It highlights how community rail can bring people together, support inclusion, create memorable experiences, and help ensure everyone feels welcome and confident travelling by train."

Community Rail in Action

Across the North East, Yorkshire and Humber, community rail continues to thrive, with six community rail partnerships and around 120 station volunteer groups actively working to improve the rail experience. These groups collaborate with train operators, local authorities, charities, and community organisations to enhance station environments, promote sustainable travel, and ensure that railways remain accessible and welcoming for all.

Community rail plays a vital role in connecting people and places, celebrating local heritage, and keeping rail services at the heart of community life. The positive outcomes of these partnerships are evident as they encourage more people to use trains, maintain a focus on sustainability, and create a sense of community pride.

With initiatives like Community Rail Week, the efforts of volunteers and local organisations are recognised, reinforcing the importance of railways in everyday life and their potential to bring communities together. As communities continue to explore ways to enhance their rail services, it is clear that the journey towards more inclusive travel is well underway.
