Road Works Scheduled on A59 in York for 28 June Maintenance Efforts

Welcome to Yorkshire

Published on June 25th, 2026

Residents and visitors in York should prepare for road works on Sunday, 28 June, affecting the A59. The City of York Council is continuing its Highway Maintenance programme this summer, which aims to improve road conditions across the area. This particular work will involve filling potholes and applying surface dressing on the A59 from the A1237 roundabout to the boundary at Moor Monkton, as well as on Carr Lane.

Details of the Road Works

The maintenance work on the A59 will take place from 7am to 5pm on the specified Sunday. During this time, motorists and cyclists will need to be aware of diversions in place to ensure safety and reduce traffic disruption. The council has emphasised the importance of these works, as maintaining roads is crucial for keeping traffic flowing smoothly throughout the city.

Diverted Routes for Motorists

Motorists using the A59 will be directed to take alternative routes, primarily via the A168 and A19 through Dishforth and Thirsk. The A59 is known for accommodating larger vehicles, so the diversion routes have been chosen to handle this traffic effectively. Here are some key points regarding the diversions:

  • Bus services 82, 83, and 84 will not be affected, as they do not operate on Sundays.
  • Poppleton Park and Ride will remain open, but access will be from the A1237 instead of the A59.
  • Alternative Park and Ride sites will include:
    • Askham Bar – accessible from the A1 / A64 from the west.
    • Rawcliffe Bar – located just off the A19/A1236 junction.
    • Monks Cross – reachable via the A19 and A1237 (outer ring road).

Cycling and Alternative Routes

Cyclists will also encounter diversions during the road works. They will be directed along Marston Lane to join the B1224 near Rufforth and then onto Beckfield Lane. This ensures that cyclists can navigate safely around the work zones without unnecessary delays.

Impact on Local Residents and Businesses

The council has made it clear that while road works are in progress, pedestrian and mobility aid routes will remain open to ensure that residents can access their homes safely. Local businesses will also stay open, and emergency services will be permitted access at all times. All on-street parking in the work area will be temporarily suspended, but specific arrangements can be made with site traffic management if needed.

Quotes from the Council

Councillor Kate Ravilious, the Executive Member for Transport at City of York Council, shared insights on the importance of these maintenance works. She stated, “Across the whole of York we look after over 500 miles of roads, from tiny lanes to major routes like the A59. Maintaining all of these plays a crucial part in keeping everyone moving in the city.” She added, “We are doing all that we can to minimise disruption, offering diversions, sharing this information, and sending letters to local residents to help you plan ahead.”

Stay Informed

For those wishing to stay updated on road works and potential disruptions in the area, the City of York Council encourages signing up for email alerts via their website. More information about planned highway works for the year can also be accessed online.

As the works on the A59 and Carr Lane approach, it's essential for motorists, cyclists, and residents to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid delays. With the council's commitment to improving road safety and conditions, these temporary inconveniences will ultimately contribute to smoother travel across York in the future.
