|The Yorkshire Wildlife Park (YWP) has been commended by the renowned charity Polar Bears International (PBI) for its exceptional work in polar bear conservation. This accolade highlights YWP's dedication to raising awareness, advancing knowledge, and fundraising for initiatives aimed at saving polar bears.
A Decade of Dedication: Project Polar
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, YWP’s “Project Polar” is one of the largest polar bear reserves globally, home to six polar bears: Nobby, Hamish, Luka, Indiana, Yuma, and Sisu. The project underscores YWP's long-term commitment to polar bear conservation, combining extensive research with practical care.

Daily Talks and Educational Outreach
Rangers at YWP provide daily talks about polar bears, educating visitors on the critical issues facing these magnificent animals. These talks also help raise funds for the WildLife Foundation, YWP's own charity dedicated to global conservation efforts.
Collaboration with Polar Bears International
For the past nine years, YWP has been a proud member of PBI’s Arctic Ambassador Centre Network, the only one in the UK. This partnership was recently celebrated by PBI, marking the 20th anniversary of the network. PBI praised YWP for its impactful contributions to the conservation of wild polar bears and its success in inspiring communities to take action.
Polar Bear Conference
In January, YWP and PBI co-hosted a two-day polar bear conference, attracting delegates from around the world, including the US, Denmark, Norway, Estonia, Germany, and France. The conference focused on climate change, veterinary care, and the role of zoos in polar bear conservation, drawing significant international attention.
Supporting Global Conservation Initiatives
The WildLife Foundation, based at YWP, is at the forefront of global conservation programmes. Recently, it made a £10,000 donation to support PBI’s conservation work. This funding aids ongoing efforts to mitigate the threats facing polar bears, particularly those related to climate change.
Acknowledging Visitor Contributions
John Minion, CEO of YWP, expressed pride in the park’s ambassador role for PBI and gratitude towards visitors who have supported the cause. He emphasized the importance of collective action in making a difference for polar bears' survival.
The Dire Situation of Polar Bears
Currently, approximately 26,000 polar bears exist worldwide, but without significant action, the majority could disappear by the end of the century. A recent study highlighted the critical condition of the Hudson Bay polar bears, predicting their possible extinction in the region by mid-century if climate change targets are not met.
Impact of Climate Change
Polar bears depend on sea ice for hunting and survival. As ice melts due to rising temperatures, polar bears face prolonged periods without food, unable to hunt seals. The study warns that if global warming surpasses the 2°C limit set by the Paris Agreement, polar bears could vanish from Hudson Bay between the 2030s and 2060s.
Commitment to the Future
Cheryl Williams, a trustee of the WildLife Foundation, reaffirmed their commitment to international conservation efforts. She acknowledged the challenges ahead, particularly climate change, but stressed the hope and resolve strengthened through collaboration with organizations like PBI.
A Call to Action
Williams highlighted the importance of continued support and collaborative efforts to ensure a future for polar bears. She urged for more donations and proactive measures to combat the primary threat to these animals: climate change.
Final POints
Yorkshire Wildlife Park’s in Doncaster is dedicated to polar bear conservation, through both education and practical efforts, has garnered international recognition. Their collaboration with Polar Bears International and commitment to addressing climate change underscore their pivotal role in the global effort to save polar bears.
